Hi all. Hope someone can help, I know this is a super longshot but have exhausted other avenues. My boyfriend recently had a parent pass away suddenly and unexpectedly. Non-COVID-related, as far as we can tell. Parent was very rigorous about privacy and apparently used 1Password. Apparently parent was a little *too* good at being private, because nobody in the family has access to 1P code, 1P Emergency Kit, bank/investment/business info, etc. Parent’s SO is not aware of 1Password or existence of a will. Parent was pretty young so maybe thought there was more time to prepare this critical info for the family. My question is, what would y’all do in this situation? They have torn apart the house to look for clues but no luck. Is there anything they can do besides hope they crack the password? I feel really bad for my BF and want to help. I was considering asking on Reddit but then remembered Blind and thought I’d ask you all first. It won’t be the end of the world if they don’t figure out the password, but it would make a very difficult time a little easier. Thanks all in advance.
The passwords are encrypted by master password and is not recoverable without the master password.
Yes, that’s what I feared based on my Google searches. Thanks.
However you can probably recover individual passwords if mobile phone is connected to the account or family members know the answer of security questions.
When you set up 1Password, they give you a PDF you’re supposed to keep in a safe place with the key, which is separate than a password. Mine starts out as “1Password Emergency Kit”.
Thanks for confirming the emergency kit (1P site made it sound optional, so we weren’t sure if Parent definitely had one). The family has checked main residence but have a few other homes, will have to check there too. Thank you!
If he used chrome or something, go into settings and search for passwords. You can free text view saved passwords as long as you have the os pw of the computer. Might get lucky and it’s in the list or saved, double used, etc.
this is a great push, they have been able to log in to the laptop so maybe this will work. thank you!
Maybe there is a safety deposit box and it’s on paper in there?
apparently some family found a SD box at their home in NJ. we are trying to get it open, seems unlikely that it will be there (they don’t travel there often) but fingers crossed! thank you
Sorry to hear that. I'd start by emailing their customer support.
I’ll give them a try, thank you
