Hi, I have a full time remote job and currently based out of Lynchburg, Virginia. I am planning to relocate as the travel, both domestic and international, from Lynchburg to any other place is a pain. Austin is a no brainer but I have kept Vegas in the list as the place is great for travelling and we want to explore the region. Close proximity to AZ, UT and CA. I know there is no big tech jobs in Vegas, so anytime I change job next ,and if it is not a remote one, I will have to relocate again. So given that, is Vegas a good choice? We can rent the property out when we move out is my thought Incase the market crashes. The house prices also seem to be a bit overvalued for a place like Vegas, even higher than Austin it seems but again the property tax is low in comparison. I am renting here in VA and my 2BR apartment is 800$ a month, and my avg. monthly expenses never go beyond 2500, even when living generously, so I do save a lot here. Any suggestions would be great :) YOE 11 TC - 270 No longer with GE.
Go to Vegas. Much more interesting place than boring Austin.
Lynchburg !! 🫤
Lol , yes it is a small place but a nice one. People are nice here and smile and greet each other on the streets.
Hang out at J.Crew
Austin for the long haul, Vegas just for short trips
Vegas sux interms of living there. Summers are much much worse than austin
Isn't humidity more in Austin than Vegas? Heat I can take but humidity is the worst.
May be you are right with humidity.. but the heat is so bad that you can't walk out for more than 2 mins
Depends on your work model and commute. If you have to go in Austin has severe growing pains and the traffic is terrible. Like it could take an hour to get from north to south Austin. Austin has a lot to do and is vibrant but driving distance day trips are all still in tx and it gets boring. Vegas might have less cultural variety but more interesting options for weekend day trips. I’d prob still go with Austin though
Yes, so I have heard. I mean a decent SFH housing in Austin proper is upwards 800k it seems. So the options are places like Leander, Cedar park and similar other suburbs. Though rn my work is remote and this job will always stay remote, in the future a new job might not be so.
Leander and cedar park are the straight burbs and would take Awhile to get anywhere cool. But I’d actually advise going southwest to The hill country area if you can be remote. It’s more beautiful and has some cool stuff going along with hills and valleys with good views.. more of a country vibe whereas Leander and cedar park is in former super flat farmland
How close are you to a major airport in Virginia?
Nearest major ones are Dulles and Charlotte....both are around 4 hours drive.
Whew! 4 hours. Yea... I think you'll be fine with either City. You can be an hour away in any direction from nearest airport and still have nice living. As someone who has relocated Ca to Ga (with regrets), I highly recommend spending a week in both areas and talk to natives where you can. You'd probably pay about the same in airline flights with a slight edge that Vegas will be cheaper. Something tells me you will have more fun in the Vegas region overall.
Why are you limiting yourself to these 2 places?
I narrowed down to these two . I had Dallas, Chicago and Phoenix in my list as well. Any other place you have in mind? CA is ruled out as I cannot afford to buy a house there.
Houston, RTP, smaller metros, etc. It all depends on what all you want apart from house affordability.
Vegas = Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Mammoth, Sedona, Bryce Canyon, Zion, valley of fire, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Death Valley
Vegas any day
Austin. I love Vegas, but there's just not much to do outside the of the strip
I don't think I will be visiting the strip too much. The reason for picking Vegas is it's proximity to places like zion, grand canyon, kanab and similar places within a day's drive without having to rent a vehicle everytime.
Yeah, good point
