Help me decide if I should switch companies...

I am considering leaving Qualtrics to go to Amazon AWS. The AWS team that I would be on seems pretty cool but I was only able to negotiate about a 10% increase in TC from what I currently make (they wont budge). I am really happy at Qualtrics and a 10% raise does not seem worth it to me. I guess Amazon would be a decent resume builder and I could probably make the hop from there to some place even better.

So what would y'all do? Stick around at Qualtrics and see if something better comes my way or bounce to Amazon?

Right now I'm leaning towards staying at Qualtrics.

TC:150k
YOE:1.5

You have your answer. I agree Amazon is not worth 15k more when you are very happy where you're at. Flip it: imagine you get to Amazon and hate it? Imagine how little that 15k will help. After taxes you're talking a couple hundred bucks a month. Stay.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. Just wondering if having Amazon on my resume would be a good reason to go.

Not enough trade off for me. YMMV. But based on what you wrote, I would not make that move. For only 10% more (peanuts after taxes) and the very-well-stated known feedback on amazon/AWS, no go for me. I say that having turned down moving forward in a very attractive AWS role myself. Didnt feel it was worth it. If you're good enough to get this far with AWS then you will likely have plenty of opportunities in the future.

But what if I hate it? I'm just a bit nervous because I've heard some horror stories

AWS has thousands of employees, horror stories are someone else stories

  • 10% bump would be enough for a company with good WLB but seems like a poor choice for losing your WLB. You will get a bigger annual raise at qualtrics most probably so you are only getting maybe a 7-8% raise

I just got a pretty big raise which put me at the 150k tc mark. I will probably promote within a year so that'll be a big bump

You might want to wait in qualtric as you should have stocks to be vested after acquisition

SDE1, no level change. Probably because I only have 1.5YOE.

You lose out with a 10 percent raise on just benefits alone. Plus if you get promoted you should be close or > 200k tc
