Help me decide what’s next

I hate my team at Meta. I’m being micromanaged all the time, and I don’t feel like I’m learning anything. I’ve been there for 1.5 years and I got MA last time. I was promised during my interview that I was going to do some ML as part of my project, but I haven’t even trained a Linear Regression model. It’s all Unidash and pipelines to analyze crappy data from Data Centers. And I also feel like I’m underpaid compared to real Data Scientists in NY. I’ve decided to move on. I care more about good challenges and professional development than TC, as long as it’s reasonable. I want to wake up and enjoy my job on a Monday morning, not hate my miserable life. I started interviewing 4 months ago. Initially I was getting lots of rejections, then I changed my resume a little bit and started getting interviews. Here are my options: - CVS Health/ Senior Data Scientist —> TC $148K, - Walmart/ Data Engineer —> TC $159k, - Small Data Consulting Company (direct competitor in Data of Deloitte, PwC, etc) —> TC $115k Walmart is going to be more of the same job I’ve been doing, CVS is a team more focus on ML, but didn’t get a good vibe from the hiring manager while interviewing. The Consulting company have a very cool environment and I feel like I’m going to learn a lot of technical stuffs while also polishing soft skills like customer service, negotiation, presentation skills, etc. How hard is to come back to FAANG from Data Consulting? What would you do in my situation and WHY? Thanks in advance for your advice! TC: 156k #dataanalytics #data #datascience #dataengineer #faang #consulting

CVS seems decent. Walmart not

What is your level at meta ? TC seems very low. You will miss the big tech vibe if you join CVS.

What's ma? Stay at meta if possible till market improves

MA - Meet All. Can’t have it any more, I hate it there, plus I feel I’m going to be layoff all the time.

Google gzfjhf Dec 2, 2023

That's good then, right? Ma? The offers you got are not great. It's just a waste of 1.5 years you already spend at meta and you truly do not know what it will be like at those new places. Reflect on your experience, present yourself in positive way, look for something better. This is my honest advice. If it's unbearable then it's a different story.

I'd keep interviewing, none of these sound good. Try to coast a little more. Big layoffs are not performance based anyway.

Switch teams. Don’t leave Meta. You’ll be making way more once you get promoted & other companies do not pay that well or promote as fast as Meta. This is not the economy to be switching jobs. If it’s too difficult, try to find joy outside of work until your situation improves.

I would wait it out a bit, if you wanna go to New York, maybe apply for data scientists/quant positions at hedgefunds/pods

Bloomberg Maldini731 Dec 2, 2023

It sounds like you are early in your career and are making an emotional decision. Remember, you need emotional discipline to have a successful career. All these companies will still be waiting for you and you will be a much more valuable candidate once you’re a senior in big tech.

Would you be able to share the org / team name?

Instacart cv_2022 Dec 2, 2023

OP, I think you need to have some longer term vision before you make a change in your career? In 5~10 years, what do you want to do? If you want to become a data science manager overseeing a team made of product analysts and some ML data scientists. Then staying at your current role or transferring to another team but staying at the same function is not a bad idea. If you want to be a MLE/MLS at a FAANG company, then you need to switch out of that role immediately and trying to get into a role with 100% coding and modeling experience. This is a question much more important to answer than resolving your temporary situation. Because at this market, getting out of Meta is much easier than getting back into it.
