Well lived through a few ones. The Meta one was the biggest and the toughest: - hiring freeze: that's the first sign they will start with junior roles and go up as it gets more aggressive - leadership leaving: you'll see VPs and senior directors leaving - reorgs: This can go in parallel with leadership change. I'm not talking about small regular reorgs but the ones that affect many teams across the orgs. A lot off talks about reprioritization etc - rescinding offers: some companies may start revoking offers. Meta didn't do this until the end though - talk about pip and pushing low performers out. You'll see a lot of folks suddenly leaving - rumors. As the layoffs get closer the rumors become stronger - layoffs
So google doesn't have leadership leaving and rescinding offers yet.
Suggest travel bans as a late stage sign. Companies may ban travel a few weeks before a layoff to avoid having to deal with laid off workers who are in the middle of a company trip while talking it up as a cost cutting measure.
Same thing is happening with swiggy, we have a planned meet up of all employees which is cancelled as of now & no further dates are announced 🥲
You forgot the part where companies do it because others are doing it. It’s really stupid how companies are hiring aggressively until they layoff. Financial decisions generally happen a quarter/half in advance and it will never lead to such massive scale layoffs. If Leadership is trash, layoffs will happen.
You can also check balance sheets. If they are spending lot on employees with no importance to share holders than layoffs are confirmed
A layoff signals upcoming layoff?

- when company makes no revenue but still hired like crazy in 2021-22
Meta made billions but still laid off people. It's a necessary but not sufficient condition. And it's mainly about growth not revenue.
Companies have had record profits and yet the laid off people. Meta did because ZuckRobot is a moron for going all in on Metaverse And others did it to please their investment overlords . Because if the hedge fund types miss their quarterly bonuses then they'll die of hunger
