I was recently talking to a colleague who is looking at optimizing their compensation given the hot job market. I realized my knowledge is a little out of date and wanted to get the collective blind wisdom on what are the best landing spots for mid career product Managers - in general but also for Google PMs. I've seen some folks move to Airbnb and Doordash in addition to the usual Netflix Facebook etc, but overall what would be the highest jumps folks see for mid career Google Product Managers? Assume something like L5-L6/7. I am cognizant that there are tradeoffs to make with factors like work life balance, culture, mission etc but assuming folks are okay with those changes what would be the places people are seeing biggest jumps in compensation. Thank you! Edit: This is not for me, trying to figure out what potential paths folks in the company might take. My situation in terms of career is different :) TC: 4M
Highest I’ve seen is probably 4.1M
Is this ur TC or household?
No it's my TC. Household is approximately 2X.
Based on my experience, not comprehensive or representative of entire market. Meant to be tiers solely based on average offer at each level. There are tons of similar posts you can look at as well and Levels.FYI is not a bad resource for understanding average pay. T1: Facebook, Netflix, Lyft, Airbnb, Snap, Brex, TikTok, Instacart, Coinbase T2: Google, Stripe, Square, Uber, LinkedIn, Twitter T3: Microsoft, Apple, Amazon OP - Would love to hear about your experience getting to $4M TC. Share if you can! Edit: changed the above based on suggestions below that I agree with
I’d wanna add Instacart and Coinbase as T1 or even above them. L7 Coinbase gets like 800k. T3 I’d add Atlassian, Indeed and DocuSign. P5s here would be 400-500 similar to an L7 at Amazon. I really don’t think MSFT is T3. They pay low.
This is great, exactly what I was looking for. I do know about levels.fyi but based on things I had heard it seems that the data is either pretty stale or it might be low because it has more data points from people who are getting offers at the lower end of the spectrum. I suspect folks moving within top tier companies are getting much higher offers - which lines up better with what I've heard internally within Google. In terms of my experience - there is an AMA I did a while ago where I went into a lot of detail. But tldr is joined Google about 15 years ago and kinda kept growing with the company. I am an L9 now and the TC is significantly higher because I got a retention bonus a couple of years ago. Happy to talk about any specifics if it helps.
FB L6 should hit 500, l7 700+. Or roughly a half level ahead of Google. And high performers can definitely start getting AE at L6
Aligns well with what I've heard, thanks!
At L6 in a growth stage company. Moved here from Google where I was an L5. Google TC was 320k in COlarado New company pays about 340k without paper stock appreciation, but like our next appraisal was 2x of my grant value so 410k if liquidity happens without any more changes. I’m hoping for a 6-8x growth before liquidity, but realistically, we might see a 3-4x growth, which is still nice.
Yeah pre IPO companies have been a different beast altogether. A friend made bank moving to coinbase from being a VP at Google. Not like he was doing bad by any means, but now he is founder rich 😁
Founder rich mean multiple hundred millionaire or billionaire?
You won the TC game.
Haha thank you. Luckily both me and my spouse have done really well and have reached a point where our wealth almost outgrows our TC anyway.
4m TC and top contributor. Some folks get everything in life 😂
Sundar : you naughty! How many times do I have to tell you to stop wasting time on Blind?
But if Facebook is down what else do I do?
What role does your wife work at? Her TC is unbelievable. It’s inspiring to know that women earn in millions in Tech.
You make more than many mid size company CEOs. Lol 4M as a PM? Wow. I’m happy I chose the right profession lol
I may or may not be a PM, keeping it a little unknown for the sake of privacy. That being said I know a good chunk of PMs making good money, so your conclusion still holds.
Thanks @wooloo1. I interviewed for FB and I have 1.5 YOE in product and there were willing to pay me 400k. The only companies that pay more at my level other than FANG would be Instacart, Coinbase that I know of.
