Downloaded the 2018 Stack Overflow tech salaries report. I was surprised to see the job title "dev ops specialist" as the highest paid job in NA and EU. I always thought of dev ops guys as admins with little amount of python knowledge https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DSq3mNMWE-P4fQICAu5-2ODvLin2k8pV/view?usp=sharing Don't know if the guys at stack overflow are out of their minds.....Also the salaries listed are so low. Whom are they trying to fool?
If they mean SREs, then ok - they typically make as much as SWEs at real companies. OPs description is dumb. "Admins with little Python knowledge" is foolish. No, I'm not an SRE either.
Also, who is dumb enough to believe a salary survey from Stack Overflow
Blind is elitist compared to the whole stack-overflow community
Funny considering how many Blind users likely rely on SO ;-) I found the comment about pay to be funny: also the pay is so low who are they trying to fool. Blind groups are so elitist they don’t even understand that in much of the US cracking a 6 figure in a tech job means you are in the Director level. “What!? 85k!? No way would anyone ever accept that for an experienced developer/engineer/dba/etc job unless they sucked!!!”
I've never seen an SRE as just a tech support. Tech support is actually another job entirely.
They grouped backend engineers with data scientists and a bunch of other unrelated engineering specializations.
Buzzword of the year gets money thrown at it. Nothing new.
Their salaries vs blind salaries are miles apart . I wonder what all the 450K + TC people do
Lie on Blind.
Developers tend to think that no other job exists or is important, esp. strategic and tactical jobs. This is amplified by the “cult of me” elitism on Blind.
I think it's just that "devops specialist" is an extremely broad title that could mean almost anything since the breadth of devops is, well, extremely broad.
Agreed, which is why the average tends upwards on pay. I’ve worked at both ends of the spectrum (with and without flashy title) and the pay was always good.
We haven’t killed the term “devops” yet?
Everyone wants to go to the cloud right now and a lot of admins only know old school VMware stuff so devs or even system engineers that learn devops culture get paid really well. On the flip side devops isn't really a title it's more of a culture in an organization. SRE, SWE are actual titles.
