Hiring first software engineer for an Amazon Alexa team. Fully virtual role in the US.

Team is small and consists of PMs and scientists currently. I'm an applied scientist manager and I'm hiring our first software engineer (L5 or L6) to lead the technical direction for the team. Low ops and only daytime oncall. Fully virtual in the US as well. The engineer will both support our customer facing ML models (e.g. infrastructure, integration, automation, etc.), as well as create new greenfield services (both science related and non science related) end to end. The scope of the team is wide and we have high flexibility in the types of services the engineer can create and own. Until q3 2022, it will mostly be supporting ML models, but after that the role will probably be building new services from scratch 75% of the time. Edit for additional info: No longer open to hiring in India. No ML experience required. Good wlb - everyone only works <= 40 hours a week. I've also never had to pip anyone, nor has my org pipped anyone who wasn't obviously underperforming. Can't promise there will never be an unfair pip request from leadership in the future but I will fight it if I think it's to just meet quotas. DM me if you want more information. If you want to apply, DM me your resume and let me know which level you want to apply for. #hiring #amazon

No thanks, keep your PIP and URA target somewhere else

Salesforce MagicDaddy Apr 26, 2022

Hey! I'm willing to cry myself to sleep for 12 months to hit 400k TC

Do you hire L4?

Amazon pfjs OP Apr 26, 2022

Potentially, if you had the exact skillsets that were looking for. Mainly creating internal web services using AWS, so familiarity with the AWS stack as well as knowing at least one language that can be used to create the backend on AWS, js/html/css, and potentially a frontend library like react.

Accenture 1450LC Apr 26, 2022

What’s the best way to get familiar with the aws stack? Was going to ask the same question about L4.

OP, would Amazon provide work sponsorship?

Amazon pfjs OP Apr 26, 2022

Yes

DM-ing you.

Where’s the pip outline?

Amazon pfjs OP Apr 26, 2022

Never had to pip anyone personally. And my org has never pipped anyone who wasn't obviously underperforming. I can't 100% promise that there will never ever be an unfair pip request from leadership some time in the future because who knows what the future will bring. But I will 100% fight against it if I believe it's just to meet quotas (which again, hasn't happened in my org).

Adobe Blind4Fun Apr 26, 2022

“And my org has never pipped anyone who wasn't obviously underperforming.” - as if all the pips need your approval ! I am yet to see an SDM who accepts unfairness in URA. Meeting URA targets (12% focus hits) without unfairness isn’t possible buddy.

Any plans for a L3 hire ?

Amazon pfjs OP Apr 26, 2022

Amazon starts with l4 as entry level.

RSA Security mfdM18 Apr 26, 2022

do you have Sr. SDEt opportunities?

Amazon pfjs OP Apr 26, 2022

Unfortunately I don't :(

Oracle wmmr003 Apr 26, 2022

Are there any L7 PM openings in your team?

Amazon PYkG72 Apr 26, 2022

Stay away from Amazon. Quoting OP: "Cannot 100% promise there won't be an unfair PIP in the future" If the manager says this when trying to sell the team, imagine the reality.

Amazon pfjs OP Apr 26, 2022

Can't tell if you're trolling. You intentionally misquoted me and left out that I said the unfair request is from leadership. You've never had your chain of command ask for stupid things huh? I'm just telling it like it is. I have managers above me, and I don't control what they do. I'll push back against them as needed though. But hey, you're already prejudiced against the company. It doesn't matter what I say, I won't change your mind and that's fine.

Amazon PYkG72 Apr 26, 2022

Stop embarrassing yourself. The fact that you are even acknowledging that upper management can ask you to do stupid things, itself conveys how toxic Amazon's management is, and no one in their right mind will join this place. Had my share of toxic management experience recently. Good managers don't last at Amazon. If you try to defend and go against URA, you will be PIPed yourself. Managers lasting for more than 3 years here have resorted to some or the other toxic practice, and at the 5 year mark they are pretty much unemployable anywhere else. (Some one companies even shadow ban Amazon SDMs to keep the toxicity away).
