Do you like to see metrics in candidate resumes? I have seen quite few resumes and it mostly just sounds like a bloat. I am looking to switch now so considering this. I am leaning towards not cooking up some metrics unless its clear and important like ‘scaled the app to handle 10x users’ etc. But stuff like ‘decreaed deployment time by 25%’ just sound ridiculous to me. Thoughts?
Absolutely to metrics and scope of influence, impact to business etc. I dont like seeing a task list of your role; it doesnt tell me your value to the business, at all. Task lists are whats ridiculous, not quantifiable metrics. Its a resume, not a job requisition.
The value of a candidate to the business is not solely dependent on the candidate and his skills. Its actually largely the work of product and engineering management. I can tell you how many times I have seen brilliant engineers being managed by incompetent ppl who would change priorities, scratch projects, pivot and bla bla bla. At the end nothing gets to prod so no impact. But that doesnt mean this engineer isnt valuable. So what I look for is skill above all.
Do you not realize skill translates into real world, quantifiable metrics? The skill is not just technical skill, rather the combination of hard and soft skills that you're alluding to when talking about work of product and engineering management. How do you prove that? Quantifiable metrics, scope of influence etc, not a task list or a bulleted list of "skills". This is fairly easily understood, when you think of "brilliant engineers". Also, why are you asking HMs when you have already made up your mind?
You don’t have to cook up a metric, but try to give something measurable could be in terms of reduction in overall deployment time from x min to x-y and if you know the time you reduced you can easily come up with a percentage, if the percentage isn’t great then don’t add that point at all as it doesn’t show a great improvement
Metrics can definitely be helpful, but if you feel like you have to make them up, don't bother. Unless you have a real idiot for a HM, we can tell if you fabricate /inflate them.
> decreaed deployment time by 25% Lol I had that line in my resume.
Some more context around the point is needed but it can be powerful imo!
