Hit $1 million net worth at 30 thanks to Microsoft

Yes this is a humble brag post, but more than that a testament to the fact that finding a job that pays the highest TC isn't necessarily the only/best/quickest path to building wealth. My first job out of college was at Cisco in bay area as a G4 in 2015. I was there for 4 years and managed to save about $115k, but my role was incredibly stressful. I then joined MSFT in 2019 and increased my portfolio to $1M in about 4.5 years. Yes i know it's not the highest compared to blind standards, but the package MSFT has been giving me overall in the last few years has been nearly perfect: 1. My WLB is amazing. I work on average between 20-30 hrs a week. My TC is around 280k as a senior engineer and have gotten RSUs twice. 2. I love the work that I do on a daily basis and am still learning. I have an amazing team and an incredibly supportive manager and skip. Been consistently getting 140% rewards for the past 3 years. 3. I typically take 5-6 weeks of vacation and have been travelling to new places twice a year. Have visited 15 countries so far, hoping to do 3x a year going forward. Traveling is my biggest hobby and the fact that I have flexibile vacation matters a lot to me. 4. I work fully remote. 5. I have 0 stress about my job. I can't emphasize enough how much my overall quality of life has changed for the better since I left that stressful job at Cisco. I don't have any dependents and my partner and I pretty much split expenses (we don't live together at the moment), which obviously helps save more. All in all, I could definitely make more as a senior engineer at other tech companies but I highly doubt everything else will be equally balanced like it is at Microsoft. Again everyone's situation is different, but think what matters the most to YOU before deciding on your next role, don't worry about the rat race. At this point in my life, no amount of money can convince me to take another stressful job or one with a bad WLB. Happy to answer any questions. Edit: screenshot below is from Credit Karma. Edit 2: portfolio breakdown is 25% 401k, 25% cash (buying a property in the next 6 months), and 50% investments, of which: 30% is MSFT, 35% is VOO, 25% is CDs, 10% individual stocks (mainly nvidia).

Are you a immigrant or a citizen?

Microsoft dadynutela OP Jan 15

Not sure why it matters but citizen.

Microsoft lkasbnmq Jan 15

If you’re a citizen why not take more risk? Why not join other Faang for double TC? Worst case you get laid off and get 2-4months of free money(severance). You can take 2months vacation after each layoff. My citizen friends take year break to backpack across Europe and South America. You don’t need to travel with your job or be married to the job

TC at Microsoft is like a new hire at FAANG 🤣

Microsoft dadynutela OP Jan 15

Yep 😊 and I'm very happy with it.

Microsoft aka.ms/🥜 Jan 15

as long as you don’t get layed off

Google LizardFoot Jan 15

Is your primary work device a MacBook?

Asking the real questions

Microsoft dadynutela OP Jan 15

No

Visa lilolilo Jan 15

Damn after 4 years your salary without tax would be 450k without tax . How did it balloon to 1million? Msft stock?

Microsoft dadynutela OP Jan 15

That's part of it, but also investments and being lucky with the market

Visa lilolilo Jan 15

Investments like what

Microsoft Unret Jan 15

I'm gonna guess fairly large stock sign on coupled with stock growth. If he got 150k in 2019, that's 570k now coupled with espp and 401k growth and his existing 115k would easily be 1 million. For reference, I also started in 2019 with no initial investments rollovers and a very small stock sign on and I'm at about half this.

Microsoft dadynutela OP Jan 15

Credit Karma. Not as good as Mint sadly

Amazon jack- Jan 17

Why not mint then?

Microsoft iownblind Jan 15

Which team

Microsoft dadynutela OP Jan 15

Somewhere in Xbox. Can't be specific.

Microsoft 🐯 grr Jan 15

Xbox is small and there’s only a handful of 30 year olds fewer that are seniors let alone starting in 2019 that came from Cisco. See you at the lunch train lol btw can you pay for my lunch?

Investment Bank Glinda Jan 15

Congratulations, OP. Our retirement is going to be so much sweeter thanks to Microsoft stock options exercised at $20-$28. We are hanging on to many shares because Microsoft still has a great growth trajectory.
