Home owners, recommendation to prevent break-in?

Fellow tech savvy home owners, I wonder what you do to protect your home from break-in. Do you install surveillance camera? If so, what do you recommend and where to install? I am also curious if it does not violate Washington state law for having a camera to video record the street which may include neighborhoods. It seems light will work the best but I thought it is better to have evidence when filing a police report. Also, how is the alarm system or having a service like ADT? I live in eastside of Seattle and it has been safe but I know a neighbor whose window was broken as the intruder tried to unlock the front door during the day time. So I got to think how I can deter such activity and also have the evidence to capture the criminals. Thanks for any comments!

Cameras won't help much. Where I live people steal packages off front porches in full view of ring doorbells. The video never helps the cops catch anybody. A fully loaded home security system with glass breaking detection is the best you can do. That and leave a floodlight on (although that doesn't seem deter derermined criminals).

Police recommended ring doorbell to us after a break in. Video the neighbors had helped get the guy.

Did you put in the doorbell? Was it from a company called Ring?

I have developed a keen interest in use scenarios for the 180/360 degree fisheye cameras. NRA stickers alongside the security system ones on your windows. Hmm... also not a big fan of hedges that could help someone hide as they move through your yard. Make a potential threat feel “exposed” and want to move onto the next house. Motion-detector lighting, maybe make sure someone trying to look in through the sides of your binds/curtains doesn’t see any obvious valuables they’d want to break in for. Could tint home windows and keep lights completely off at night.

Move to a better neighborhood

AR15 and shoot to kill.

Microsoft YjFd14 Apr 2, 2018

WA law will make you regret doing that.

Ask your wife and daughter to not flaunt jeweleries or anything that shines. That is number one reason for break ins in Redmond. Not sarcastic or anything. Seriously.

Don't flaunt wife.

VMware nitO16 Apr 2, 2018

There's only one way to safety: Make sure your wife and your daughter don't flaunt anything. In the meantime, you and your son should go out and flaunt your exotic cars.

Get an alarm system and put signage for it in your front and backyard, if you have an attached garage then keep the door to your garage locked and install a deadbolt there as well as any exterior doors that don’t have one, Ring cameras (if filming the street is not legal, then set the motion sensor on anything street-facing to only trigger when something moves on your property), exterior motion lights, flood lights over the driveway, keep your front door light on at night, when you’re on vacation plug in a couple of timers to a wall socket and table lamps to those to give the appearance someone is home, as someone else mentioned NRA stickers next to alarm stickers on windows can also be a deterrent, and plant sticker bushes or rose bushes with thorns below windows.

2 dogs + 1 gun. Pomeranian to bark at everything, German Shepherd to bark and defend when it matters and a gun otherwise.

CareerBuilder AgnewsHead Apr 2, 2018

I'd definitely think twice about facing down an angry German shepherd

Use real 1080p or higher surveillance cameras like Amcrest not cheap ring crap. Control lights with Lutron Caseta switches that can turn lights off/on by your phone or randomly at night.

#1 - you can't prevent a break in, you can only deter #2 - cameras won't stop anyone from getting in, a ski mask and spray paint is all i need #3 - get blinds and shut them when you're out, 80% of robbery is smash and grab. So keep things out of site #4 - if you have valuables keep them in the Bank or get a safe #5 - if you're worried about break-in while you're at home, get a gun and learn how to use it #6 - lights lights lights, more lights is better. Inside and out #7 - home alarm system like ADT or Frontpoint. Make sure to arm it always when you're at our away from home

I like the idea of a sign that reads something like "Protected by the 2nd Amendment (picture of AR-15)". But then that might actually put a target on me.

Sounds like an ad for the fact you have valuables gun(s) in the house.
