Today I had such a strange experience with an interview at Apple. The IC-level interviewer was discriminatory and dismissive. I expected better from Apple. Fortunately the recruiter was understanding and said they’d act on the feedback. This is a call to others who’ve faced blatant discriminatory behavior in interviews to flag it, because you never know how companies may respond and sometimes they do the right thing. Remember, just because it’s an employers market, you don’t have to put up with disrespect! And for those wondering, here’s a taste of the comments: “Why do you want to be an IC after being a manager?” “What are you doing with your career path switching between IC and manager” “I hope you can still code because you’re a manager” “The other candidates opened coder pad faster than you” (seriously folks, I’m not kidding) “You will have a hard time in this job coming from Facebook” “I’m not going to ask you SQL questions, senior DS should know that” “All the other candidates for this role are IC” #apple
Yeah next thing you know they will be SVP.
I had a bad experience with Apple. I went four rounds of interviews. The hiring manager and director showed a lot of enthusiasm about me joining the team. I was given a verbal offer followed by radio silence. I found out months later that they hired an H1B. Apple was just wasting my time
What does a H1B have to do with the situation ? How do you know that H1B was not a better fit ?
Cheap labor + chained for ages if from BAcklogged countries
what a fucking dick. is this guy going to be on your team OP? if so walk away so not worth spending a day with someone like this if an hour is already bad enough
Believe it or not, it was a woman (with a man’s name but still…)
Sounds like a diversity hire trying to compensate for lack of self confidence/attention. Now in a power position and on a rampage to pay it back to all the managers that treated her/him badly, but truth is they just suck
I don’t think folks from China count as diversity hires in the tech industry, but the power position 💯
I wonder if this is the same person who interviewed me recently at Apple. Similar experience, she was rude AF and spoke in a demeaning manner. According to her and her words, I haven’t done much in the ML space (MLE skills) being a DS, even though HM and I had already discussed my background in detail and aligned that role was a great fit, she tried to reduce my experience to nothing. She also made up Python questions on the fly, totally unprepared, and said the same thing about SQL. Basically, lacked basic interpersonal skills and came across as dismissive as well. It’s a shame, because I really enjoyed talking to the HM and recruiter. Why does Apple have such pathetic employees, reflects poorly on the company. She was East Asian for reference (😂). Thank you for standing up to this DM me
Wow! Could be the same - was it the Marketplace Ads Platform team? I believe she was Chinese based on last name, and I’ll just say it…name had three letters?
Anybody else talk to this woman?!
Question 1 and 3 are not that negative on their own (i have had similar ones but more inquisitive and polite way) but given all other questions they were also pro ably not well intended.
Discrimination and hate speech is a big deal here. I am sure that HR is already looped in and the interviewer is under scrutiny by now.
For what? Asking someone about a move from management to IC?
This is Fked up. Also want to say that one bad Chinese interviewer doesn’t mean all are the same. I have some fantastic Chinese coworkers who are true gentleman/women. Also OP you should cut down on your jingoism like “deport” etc. remember this is a country of immigrants.
This is not a comment about a group of people. This is one person who was rude and I’ve described them so others can watch out! If it was a white male I’d write the exact same post and describe them as a white dude with a three letter name on team XYZ. Also, how do you know I’m not H1B? 😉
fwiw i recently had interview rounds at apple with few chinese interviewers that asked me fantastic questions. 1 really impressed me with picking up on something I mentioned and being able to go deeper into that topic with me asking a side question...I genuinely had fun during the interview. Wasn't in DS but just wanted to give my perspective so people don't develop more biases than people have already developed since 2020. :/
“Why do you want to be an IC after being a manager?” - How is this question discrimination?
That one is not, but following by the rest OP posted the intent is clear
What is being discriminated here? Mgrs is the only thing I see. That’s not illegal. I agree this was rude but I don’t see discrimination. Someone please spell this out for me as I’m missing it

Is "From the River to the Sea" So Wrong?
Sounds like the interviewer was just rude. That is a signal that you will not get that role
I bowed out with this feedback to the recruiter before any feedback came in. Talk about a culture!
Good call, OP. I was at apple and it’s a weird place that’s better at marketing than backend engineering.
