How Products like Google will die

Let's use this thread to predict the pivotal way where an established tech product will start dying. I will start with how Google search may die - The internet is no longer like old internet where the information is scattered around Millions of websites. Majority of information is now controlled by top 30-50 websites (wikipedia, Amazon, Yelp, reddit, Pinterest, Expedia, zillow, Stack overflow, Medium, webmd, ...). These websites will cut access of their contents to Google search and launch a combined Search engine. Google will only serve the content from rest of the internet which is polluted by SEOs spamming the Google search result.

By then we will have died

Microsoft pixelsss Jan 16, 2022

I was thinking about the same thing. It is going to take really long time, and by that time Google will be doing multiple new products al together.

DuckDuckGo is the way to go

It’s a good thought experiment. Typically companies die from some new tech that has unforeseen consequences. ML is the next big thing on the horizon so my guess for a google disruptor is that the web gets so polluted with malicious AI agents generating content that is so hard to detect at scale that google search becomes useless. Obviously this would hit any open site: twitter, Reddit, discord, will all get overwhelmed with agents spreading disinformation for various self serving reasons (e.g. Chinese propaganda or ad money ) Ultimately rendering these surfaces useless in their current form

Google has solid products without good competition. OTOH, social media companies can be dislodged much more easily depending on the fad. Meta will need to keep buying social media companies. One miss and they could be out.

Meta already missed out on Tiktok which is huge now and out of its reach.

Pinterest Anti-Taxx Jan 14, 2022

Before that Meta missed out on Snap (granted, Meta did try to buy them).

Assuming Google doesn't do anything else for years...too many variables to think about.

What's a big product that Google has launched recently that actually has some user acceptance? YouTube music is a piss poor replacement for Google play music, so I cancelled that subscription. New gpay is weird AF compared to the old one, so stopped using that too. Stopped using Hangouts because you guys can't make up a coherent chat app strategy. Nest and Assistant keep on getting worse by the day. Considering all of the above, it might actually be better if Google doesn't do anything for years.

Argo AI Lidarshark Jan 14, 2022

Sounds like the average Google search result nowadays, it doesn't even answer the question. I asked if you guys had launched something decent recently, and I get an answer about your revenues.

Salesforce lLfl47 Jan 14, 2022

10 years and big tech would all vanish !
