I've been at my current firm for six years, and in my last 1-1 when discussing VP promotion, he said that he thinks my salary (99K) as a Sr.Assoc is good [enough]. Obviously, this felt like a slap in the face and sleight at even going for VP. I've always wanted to work in a hardware/software company (MS, Intel, nVidia, AMD, Samsung, etc), but given my non-traditional tech background, I decided to work as a Product Manager in a tech role for a few years before jumping ship. Now is the time. Has anyone experienced any success straight up applying for MS roles via LinkedIn or directly on MS career page? #tech #microsoft #product #manager #owner #pm #api
I worked at Microsoft. PM bar is extremely low. If you can talk you will be hired. And there are so many PMs at Microsoft. Every button, text box, has few PMs who do nothing just harass the team. From PM’s perspective it’s a good place to be. Good salary, no accountability, no work, get to party with other PMs.

Sounds like a good spot to be in, but I'd probably opt for a role where there are more learning and growing opportunities. How did yoi get in MS? Did you have a contact inside or you applied on the website like common folk?
I am not sure what being a VP at Chase means (it looks like any financial worker older than 29 is a VP of some sort). But your current compensation is about the same as that of a smart 21-year old new hire in tech (no offense), so any PM offer you can get from MSFT will be a drastic improvement. Try to read a couple of cloud computing books and courses, and try to land a position in the Azure org working closely with HW vendors. If you do well there, getting the kind of position you want at a HW company will be straightforward once the economy fully recovers.
Oh this is great advice. Thank you, I'll definitely take something from this and implement it with my strategy. No offense taken, I mean that's the whole point of this post. I've been managing for some time now with lower salary because Chase was paying for Masters, but I stopped so I need to look at other opportunities.

Hiring is still very low in most companies, but nothing stops you from trying.
