Context - New grad that joined in January, so only been here ~6 months. No bad energy between me, my team, or manager. Just got an offer with a lot more TC so I'm going to jump on it. Issue - Have two days off planned before July 4 weekend. Thinking of giving notice this Monday, but that's only 1 week and 3 days worth of notice. How poorly does this reflect on me? Its going to be a surprise for sure, but I'm more concerned about not being able to give a full two weeks courtesy. I'm also not sure if I'm allowed to use PTO once notice has been given. Thoughts?
Taking PTO after giving notice is bad form. Can you ask your new company to postpone the start date a bit so you can give a full 2 week notice? Then you look good to your new company and avoid burning bridges at the previous company. If you can't, 10 says notice isn't too bad.
This is an option too, I guess I could give notice after the holiday weekend. I'd rather leave sooner than later as the team is starting a new project and don't want to get too involved.
You don't have to get involved in the new project. Use your time to do knowledge transfer, flesh out docs etc.
Probably does reflect poorly but hey it’s just a job end of the day
As per the other comment on this thread, I personally think it’s better to delay start date by a few days so that the current company gets the full 2 weeks, just to avoid hard feelings. You never know when you run into the same person in tech years later, I’ve been approached by the same hiring manager twice for interviews when he was in a different companies
Not a big deal. It’s the 4 and people will understand
Lol it doesn’t matter
Very bad. You can get fired for this.
Lol 😂 oh no, fired!
Who cares man, it’s Charles Schwab. Doubt you will ever want to go back?
Cool place but low pay. I'm hopeful given the tech industry I won't ever need to go back.
Why does finance suck so much for tech... Just raise the damn pay a bit I don't get it.
Would it be very difficult to give a proper 2 weeks? If not, I’d highly recommend doing this. You never know when you’ll need a reference etc. try to build bridges, not burn them. Also, if your current situation is good except for comp, could you give your current employer the chance to try to match?
99% sure they won't be able to match, plus I feel like if my manager knows I already had one foot out the door this soon it might backfire on me later
Wouldn’t sweat it most will be out week of July 4th already
I mean there's not much they can do to stop you, but itd be best to leave amicably for your future. The world is smaller than you think, having good network with your team/manager might come in very handy in the future.
Eh just tell them when you're leaving and don't look back. Not much they can do from there
