How big a resume gap is too big?

I left Amazon 5 months ago (5 YoE, all at Amazon) and I’m still looking around. I have rehire eligibility, my manager says he’d be happy to have me back, but I want to save that possibility for a rainy day. Does the FANG name on the resume afford me time to figure out what’s next? This is more stressful than I thought it would be.

Are you SWE? Why are you not getting a job in this market?

Yes should have clarified. SDE 2. I can’t tell whether I’m just extremely unlucky or just out of practice or both. I had a truly bizarre Microsoft phone screen that didn’t have another person on the other end, instead they asked me to write an essay in the code comments explaining my thought process, 1 leetcode easy and 2 leetcode mediums in 60 minutes. Trying to think of a solution while also transcribing my thoughts in a coherent way was really different from what I had practiced for. Is that the standard process for all teams there?

I wouldn’t worry until you get over a year.

May I ask why you left? Im thinking of quitting to LC and then try applying to other companies. Also worried about the gap in the meantime.

always get offer first

Quitting while I was ahead. Many Amazon stories end with “I moved to a new team or got re-orged, then suddenly politics turned against me”. I wanted to end on a good note, so if life took a bad toll, I could return later.

Just say you had personal things to take care of and needed time off and now you’re ready to get back into the job market. Just because someone’s been unemployed for 5 months doesn’t mean they’ve been searching for 5 months and not having any luck...even if that’s what really is happening

5 months is not much. Enjoy your break!

Why 🤔?

People take a year off to recoup and regain mental balance. You could’ve gone traveling, or just taken time off to spend with your kid. There are plenty of reasons.
