that article is from 2012 and cites microsofts fall from 500bn to 250bn market cap. Ironically, in 2019 msft has the biggest market cap at 1tn.
Satya Nadella has done a lot to reverse that. Let's not forget what he inherited and where he's taken the company. It isn't one of the world's most valuable companies without a reason.
Their prestige was always low in tech circles. It may have actually improved in the last couple of years, IMO
