It's hard to say. My productivity went down but not only from WFH. The social aspect of work took a big nose dive which makes it less engaging and less energetic. But that doesn't need work from office, regular in person get together would fix that. I can imagine one day every sprint where everyone gets together for some social events and workshop meetings while doing all actual work from home. Also COVID limited other kinds of non work social activities so it kind of adds up. I don't think work from office of the answer but I do see value in the team all being within driving distance for in person activities every other week or so. I do see value in "team building", it creates energy and a more collaborativec spirit, so I don't agree with the people who think their only social activities should be with friends and family.

I never really cared for team building and getting to know my colleagues. All through my life I’ve had friends outside of tech and never really fully connected with the technical people I worked with for some reason. My personality and demeanor is probably better suited for non-tech, but I enjoy the work I do, so wfh has allowed me to mostly concentrate on the work and ignore the social aspect I never cared for.

Why do you think your personality and demeanor is better suited for nontech?

What do you think is missing from tech people ?

VMware dntt Jan 2, 2021

Lack of whiteboarding has been a big hindrance. Collaboration tools really suck.

Even I miss good collaboration tools.. Microsoft has an amazing opportunity here to integrate their touch screen based devices in to the teams platform! But I am still eagerly waiting for a long time..

Miro is a really good tool for collaborating

Salesforce rgbyfevvh Jan 2, 2021

I think it went up for a bit but then it went down cause of distractions at home.

I don’t think people quite realize how much productivity is lost in office settings with all the conversation, kitchen visits, etc that happen. I’d you don’t have kids and you know how to be disciplined it probably didn’t go down as much as you may think.

Xperi messi10bar Jan 4, 2021

It highly depends on what those conversations/kitchen visits are about. Lots of useful stuff is found out during those moments. Also, for it to be sustainable in the long run, not everything has to be about work.

I started a startup on the side and I think the income is going to replace my full time job so Id say WFH was awful for my corperate overlords but dont worry I too cant wait to go into the office to give my notice

Well done! What was the start up?

I am the same. For the most part I enjoy the social aspect in the office, but my ultimate goal isn’t corporate but my own business.

Stupid poll. If any director/vp reads the result, will make him/her against WFH!

Microsoft Khbffcv Jan 2, 2021

Good

OnDeck stackd$ Jan 2, 2021

Directors and VPs are itching to get back into the office particularly if they have kids at home!

Facebook iOum01 Jan 2, 2021

Productivity went up overall, but for a moment we were over correcting social distancing/lack of face time with too many extra meetings.

I bet all managers have picked “went down” option 🙈
