Asking for my GF. She has BSc in Biology, she is interested in pursuing her career as SDE because of the high pay. Can anyone please share their experiences who is having Non-CS degree ending up working for big tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook etc ———————————————————- 1)How difficult/duration will it be for her to learn & get in a race to get SDE job? 2)Does she really need Masters in CS related degree? 3)Any suggestions for taking/Not taking Crash courses? 4)Somehow if she gets into the IT field, will she able to get survive in companies like Amazon, Microsoft etc
Grind leetcode and it should be good
how about survival after getting into the company?
If you are already in msft then you should know how sde work life is
BS in pharmacy, now SDE at Amazon. My personal idea is: 1. It’s possible but may take 2-3 yrs; 2. Get a CS-related degree; 3. Crash courses are helpful at beginning, some introductions of the world of CS, but not helpful for hunting a job; 4. Yes if her mgr is good, no if her mgr is evil.
Thanks for sharing your experience 😊 1. just curious, what’s your career phase after BS in pharmacy in USA? Did you have any career breaks in between? 2. Have you done full time Masters or CS related degree?
Not in America, but in Asia. Amazon SDE is my first full time job, I used to be an intern as an after school math teacher for junior middle school students. I have a MS degree from a top Asia university in bioinformatics. And my major research results (basically some complicated string algorithms and probabilistic models for biological sequences) were published in a tier1-2 journal in this field. I am the only author other than my professor. Between BS and MS, I gapped for half an year due to some personal issues. I spend most of these time in studying math/stat/cs. Studied really hard from 2018 to 2020.
There are a ton of options on Coursera and edX that could accelerate the process, but this pursuit could demand full time for at least 6-8 months across a 2 year period. Not sure about bootcamps but don't think a full degree is necessary either. I think non degree coursework, online courses and a career coach would be enough.
I coach engineers for FANG programming interviews and have over the years met some folks who didn’t have a CS background. The biggest concern is people from social science background have a hard time grasping programming concepts and algorithms ( math based subjects are much harder than social sciences). But if the person is reasonably smart, is hardly an issue. For someone with a background in biology, they can learn ML with a focus on bio informatics, making their major an asset rather than just something to get over.
Why would you want M & A if you already have GF?
I have master's in economics. Had multiple SWE offers from Google (2), Facebook (2), Amazon (2), Apple (1) and Microsoft (1). They don't really care if your degree is CSc-related as long as you can demonstrate role-relevant skills. Some roles do require highly-specialized knowledge though. There is more education bias in ML and science roles.
It’s really inspirational 😊. Can you please share your experience on how did you land into your 1st SWE job? How long was your preparation? & Journey? Have you done any crash course/CA related degree?
