I am a senior product manager and interested in moving into a gm role. Would love to understand what is the career path of the folks that move into that role? Also I don’t have an mba.
Amazon GM is equivalent to director who owns the entire product end to end. They're coded into the system as a director so it's only a business title.
So what’s the process of getting a director level role? Do I need an MBA or just become a VP in a smaller firm and move to amazon as a GM?
There is no specific education requirement, no; may vary depending on the hiring manager. If you can show 15-20 years of progressive work experience in tech or retail (so you’re probably a VP or director already) you should be competitive.

Get promoted from Sr. Product Manager to Principal, turn into a Sr. Manager (people manager L7), and find a biztech role. Grats, you’re a GM.
I see. So it’s an equivalent of a principal PM role? Assuming principal and senior manager are the same level?
Yes they’re the same level. GM isn’t a real job code at Amazon, so technically anyone’s manager can call their direct a GM as the “business title” (read: made-up discretionary title). The most common real job role to have general management responsibility is biztech leader, and Director above it. It all just boils down to finding a role that involves p&l responsibility, as a L7 manager or L8 manager.
