25m, Canada I started out strong, undergrad at a top 3 university in Canada. Internships at a hedge fund/top Canadian pension with a return offer for a quant role. Covid hits and return offer gone right before graduation. Landed at a 💩consulting firm that was a grindhouse for a whole year. Exited over to an up and coming quant VC and thought all was good until fund was sold and was laid off last month. My work history is a scrambled mess, and I just want to have a job where I’m doing something meaningful and have a decent shot at career/financial advancement rather than jumping around. I just want to pay off my immigrant parents’ mortgage and sustain their cost of living when they retire without having to worry about whether my job is secure or have to sacrifice work fulfilment. Currently getting through doing contract work as a data analyst/scientist. Any advice is appreciated. Feel free to tear me apart, I really need to see what is the best move forward. #layoff
You’re looking for a stable job, after your most recent layoffs. Look at big companies that have some presence in Canada, or apply to US companies I don’t think you’re fucked, but you need to be more careful with who you sign up with
Just apply to US jobs and relocate
Do not feel guilt tripped to 100% support your parents. That will drag you.
No good hedge fund rescinded offers in 2020. You’re not as strong as you think if your firm rescinded offers.
This was with the pension fund. The whole department was dissolved and our book was unwound.
Like I said, in any decent fund they would find a place for you since you’re a new grad. Good funds don’t want to ruin their reputation by having a new grad be impacted by a desk closing down.
Leave canada
Grind leetcode and switch to software like everybody else in Canada who studied engineering or math
Lol I did neither haha but good call
I thought quant roles needed like basic undergrad level math? Did you self learn or?

I don't think you're as fucked as you think you are. Just get a FTE position as soon as you can, work that job for 1+ yrs and then you should be able to hop to lots of places. Anything general like business, tech analyst, data analyst, SWE/DS at a smaller company etc. will do
A smaller company will give you a broader opportunity to have an impact.
