I’m in a Prod Mgmt although I have a Masters background in MIS. I’m pretty confident about SQL and basic Python syntax but I wanna up my game to transition to a core analytical role.l working on real-time big data How can i go about it so that I’m capable enough to get into FB, Google? Any recommendations on any online courses i could look up that could help my prep? Currently I’m just thinkin to internally shift to such a role, build experience and then switch to the big ones!
Are you a product manager
Yeah I’m but I do some really basic back end data pull and manipulation (using SQL and Python) on my own without relying on others
Pm role has a better scope in amazon right.. Why do you want to transition
The Data Scientists on our team all have CS degrees.
aren’t our data scientists all writing mapreduce pipelines? that’s more of modeling engineer roles...probably not fit OP’s description.
Galvanize, General Assembly, etc..
If you can do an internal transfer to a DS role that is by far the best option. Spend a least a year learning all you can. Coursera and edx both have data science tracks you could take. Check local university for a certificate.
Agreed.
There are two classes of data science jobs, in my experience. One is mainly doing SQL and basic analysis. Similar to a BIE at Amazon. A lot of the FB data scientists roles are like this. The other class build and deploy models, which also require a lot of sql and analysis, but you must go much deeper. This may or may not include deep learning or neural networks. Your best bet might be starting with the first type since your background doesn’t sound heavy in math/stats/ML. But your infrastructure background might be a big asset when trying to hook up solutions. Once you spend some time here and pick up the technical stuff you could try to go to the other. At Amazon, that’s Research Scientist and Applied Scientist roles.
DS at google tend to have PhDs in a Quantitative field, eg statistics, math, physics, etc.
