How do you get rid of a bad Product Manager?

What can you do to get rid of a Product Manager with no engineering skills or understanding and does nothing but nose into what engineers are doing and upon objection gives negative feedback or review. It's perhaps sad to have such a person to be put in such a position to begin with, but what can you do to fix it?

Get a new job

Hotwire LuaghOn OP Apr 16, 2019

Damn. What if I joined before the PM? Do I just let go a job because of a bad hire?

Move to another industry. You're in an industry (web, mobile, gaming) that is ruled by dumb kids.

All PM’s are bad

Hotwire LuaghOn OP Apr 16, 2019

Of course. But not are so nosy, I guess.

Set rules, boundaries, and limitations. Check in frequently with demos of work so far to ensure everyone is on the same page. As trust builds, the meetings will decrease.

Hotwire LuaghOn OP Apr 16, 2019

Lol. I never said that they are having too many meetings. He wants to nose into the daily stand up and check what an engineer is doing everyday.

OpenTable Meliodas Apr 16, 2019

That is normal. Why wouldn’t a PM be at standup?

Microsoft jT47lg Apr 16, 2019

Being deeply interested in what the devs are doing by itself is not a problem and even half decent PMs should be that way. The problem is if they inappropriately get involved in implementation decisions and don’t stay in their lane: define product and what it’s supposed to accomplish and why.

Hotwire LuaghOn OP Apr 16, 2019

Just if they could understand that, they would not be so bad. Hard to show them a conceptual line.

Sirius XM Yndnd Apr 16, 2019

Say: You’ve defined the “what” in the requirements and we are executing the “how.” In general though they could be interested in the how to either understand it better or to identify possible gaps that might cause issues down the road. Do you understand their underlying intention in asking the questions they’re asking? If not, then ask because it will help you answer their questions and anticipate future questions so they don’t have to ask.

if am not wrong, You were weighing in options to join Expedia or LinkedIn right. That will solve the issue.

Hotwire LuaghOn OP Apr 16, 2019

What if same issue crops up there too? No harm in learning, right?

Wait, is this the same guy that complained that Product Managers shouldn't be able to give feedback on devs? Come on man, you need to learn to grow up and work in the real world. Your Product Manager is an integral part of your engineering team and you're lucky to have one that seems to be as integrated deeply as they are. From your previous posts I can almost immediately tell that they aren't the problem, and you are. Your product manager doesn't have to be technical, and they're at your standup and figuring out what you're all up to so they have an understanding of where the product is at and they can communicate it broadly when asked. If you genuinely can't get along with your product manager, talk to your boss and express your expectations of how an engineer and product should work together and let your manager gut check you. If you're on the same page, the three of you should sit down. For my curiosity, how do you think a product manager should interact with engineering when bringing up a product. I'm genuinely interested.

Hotwire LuaghOn OP Apr 16, 2019

I think the PM needs to connect with the EM for any statuses or issues. The EM is supposed to represent the team and the work they have been doing to the PM, without the PM having to get involved into the details and individuals. He should be on the answering side and not questioning the engineers on a regular basis. For all his questions and concerns, he should talk to the EM.

Hotwire LuaghOn OP Apr 16, 2019

In that sense, he's part of the extended team and not the dev team, just as even the EM is not a developer.

Op, you sound childish. I read your comments above. Unless your pm interferes with who does what and/or how, you have nothing to complain.

Found the PM....

So wrong.
