Was thinking of which companies I can go next in London. While I was checking what others pay, I noticed Bloomberg pays peanuts for seniors. I know Bloomberg has big engineering head count here. But when I check numbers on blind and levels.fyi they are really low. What they pay for senior is below what Google pays for L4 and I haven’t seen any staff roles etc. The pay seems to be just base and bonus. Seriously, how do they manage to hire and keep good talent and build a product which operates at large scale and allows them to make quite a lot of money? In all fairness 130k gbp etc is greater than what London startup darlings would pay to you for senior swe role, but it feels to me that for the kind of job they do they would need talent from hedge funds, trading, faang and I am not able to explain how this works. I understand some people value wlb more and wouldn’t mind getting pay cut a bit but this cut seems to be huge. To give the context if you are family with a kid or two, your miss doesn’t work and you live in zone 2 with this pay you would live from month to month. What do you think? Tc: 220k gbp Yoe: 9 #tech #bloomberg #london
Bloomberg ‘senior’ covers everything from mid level to senior staff. The top is about $350k which is lower than other but not lower than google L4
Yep Bloomberg is competitive up to and including L5. I recently got an offer for 170k GBP after negotiation with 4 YoE which is actually more than what I could've gotten at Google or Meta since I was considered for L4/E4 there (failed both). Also, Bloomberg London is better than New York compared to local market i.e. Google and Meta.
Good to know they could go up that numbers
I'm ex-bbg. 1) The interviews are considerably easier. 2 algo rounds vs 4-5 elsewhere, and questions are lower difficulty and more widely publicized. The interview difficulty is not interchangeable with higher paying companies. 2) They have massive attrition problem due to RTO, they aren't 'keeping good talent' nearly as well as you think. 3) Good WLB, I can count on a single hand the amount of times I worked past 5:30, and I started many days around 10. 4) Job Security. All cash comp, didn't layoff in 08/09, didn't layoff in 2020. Doubled down on hiring infact. I never saw a single person placed on PIP or fired during my entire time there. 5) They don't really poach talent from FAANG/Hedgefunds. I didn't see a single ex-FAANG there in my entire tenure, closest was ex-intern at FAANG. Hedgefunds, the only people I saw were ex-goldman, morgan stanley, capital one, etc...
No ex amazon, msft?
Never interacted with a single ex-amazon or ex-microsoft there. I saw plenty of ex-amazon and ex-microsoft interns though. As well as seen plenty of people get offers from Amazon/Microsoft and ended up choosing Bloomberg. Noticed quite a bit of movement attrition towards them though. Bloomberg -> Amazon or Microsoft. ____ The best influx of talent we had was during march - june of 2020 when bunch of unicorns were laying off/revoking offers and nearly nobody was hiring. Saw lots of people from Snap/Lyft/AirBnb/Etc... Join Bloomberg due to us still hiring across all levels.
Ex BB I worked 10-3 with a lunch break at BB. I only saw one person fired and that was because they told their manager that they don’t do any meetings and wouldn’t show up to standup, 1:1s, etc and don’t do code reviews (would argue if anyone didn’t immediately approve). It was a great 1 year vacation after a super stressful previous job.
Wait, did the person code at all? Did they work?
They did code but got angry if anyone commented on the code review because they believed their code was perfect. Basically they went to backlog and picked any random task they wanted, coded it and expected automatic acceptance of PRs
Well i am joining as a new.grad in London , hopefully everything works out
Hey, me too. What was your offer?

How does twitter London keep engineering talent? Top pay on levels.fyi is $268k before crash. That’s really low.
I shared what I make as sr at Twitter, you did’t need to go to levels.fyi for that. 180-200k gbp for London is pretty much what Meta / Google pays for E5 / L5 / Senior
Top bbg pay for SWE in bbg london is 407k. Top twitter London is 268k. According to levels.fyi. So what exactly is this rant about?
Incredible WLB with ok pay, all cash TC so I don’t sweat about the market crashing
What would you say the senior range is?
I cant imagine how bad the economy must be for bloomberg to layoff engineers for financial reasons. All companies would be running at 50 percent engineers tbh
To be fair, who said Bloomberg has good talent? I'm sure they're better than your average F500 but don't think they're on the level of companies like MAGA, Twitter, etc.
work for Bloomberg, have less tenure then op and make more money then op. Hmm.
What is the highest tc( not exact but a rough figure) for SSE in BBG , London? Or, how much can 11-12 yoe guys earn ?
It’s great if you pay more in London :) as I said looking what might be next 😬

So you suggest people who can’t make it to faang or jane street etc kinda just need to suck it up and be ok with low comp?
He suggests that there are always other jobs. These folks can move to something else... They don't so why would the company pay them more...
