How does a backend engineer transition to an role in HFT / Finance firms?

Clarification : transition to an engineering role in a HFT / Finance firm (Jane Street, or one of the many HFT firms baed in London) I've been a backend engineer all my career. Mostly working in Java / Ruby, writing APIS, maintaining services will moderately high traffic etc. Just the typical backend engineering stuff. I am quite interested in levelling up my TC and also want to experience what working in HFT / Finance would be like. That entire industry seems like a black box filled with elite / super smart people making a truck load of money. Unsure how true that is but I'd like to see for myself. So I just wanted advice how does an ordinary backend engineer get hired into one of these companies? Is it impossible if you do not have a strong university brand / FAANG company attached to your profile? TC: 85k GBP Past experiences : High growth well known scale-ups in London #engineering #finance #hft #london #janestreet

Like in every other place. Prepare, be ready to do a lot of take home tests, make a list of companies and apply. You need a decent cv to get noticed I found out that luck also plays huuuge role into getting in like in any other interview

Well it can be pretty similar. Most of the things are rather simple. You could write a bunch of components that get data via proto messages, calculate some stuff and send proto messages out again (obviously a bit oversimplified). People are pretty smart, humble and hard working. I enjoy working here (even tho imposter syndrome kicks in pretty often, even though my performance ratings are pretty good). You can join without faang and top uni (some firms are really school selective tho e.g. 5 rings). I joined without faang internship + pretty bad uni as a new grad.
