So at my company, we get stack ranked where we just are in some list and are ranked against other engineers our level and like line 40 cut off is best performance, line 200 is next performance level, etc. and managers have to fight for our ranking. And as far as I know, it’s against everyone. So I’m against someone from other side of the world idk wtf they even do. Is there any other companies that do it like this? How does this even work? Are managers in a meeting with a director or VP and just listing out reasons why we are better than some other person? Or just send a list of accomplishments to a VP and they just sort it out however they feel like it?
It is different at different companies and under different org VPs or org directors. There is no standard for the ranking process so the outcomes will be variable. Whatever comes out of the discussion is the stack rank, whether fair or not. Managers are often required to defend their team members against others who are doing completely different problems of different complexity. It really takes a skilled management to really understand that people are working on different complexities. If you expect fairness out of the system, you will be very disappointed.
How do I make unfairness work in my favor
Bootlicking 👅 But even that does not guarantee it because who the fuck knows how the stack will end up.
All companies do this to some extent. For some, it just makes a difference in your raises and bonuses. For others, it could mean PIP and management out as well. The trick is, just don’t think about it. Do solid work and don’t be a dick, and you’ll always at least be at the median.
I think it’s usually kind of like a contest… usually something like first place gets a Cadillac el dorado, second place wins a set of steak knives, third place wins being fired
Really depends on if you can get your hands on the premium leads TBH
The premium leads? You mean the Glengarry leads? Yeah, those are gold, but you don’t get them. Why? Because to give them to you is just throwing them away.
