Need some insights on how promotion or moving up a grade level work at Cisco.
Just continue to have open conversation with your manager. Manager and you should be able to alighn the scope/goals you need to get promo/move up a grade. Then the rest is manager helping you to find that work matching the target/scope. If you are driven and has desire to move up, I think there is no shortage of work today. The rest is just how you manage to achieve them. Once you obtain those targets, and manger still not able to you get promotion?? Time to move on to another team or another role with higher grade or external opportunities should you choose to do so. Hope this help somewhat. I don't know if there is any secret sauce. Others may share.
@life4more what you described looks more like a fairytale in the entire job market, it might look like pessimistic but it’s a common knowledge that you don’t climb up the ladder just bc of your achievements in 90% of cases, particularly in tech industry. Unfortunately the real story is different and Cisco is no exception. Moving up depends on your connection and luck, especially when you talk about higher levels like Sr director and above.
Yea, I don't disagree at all. It gets political as you move up. I thought op was just trying to increase TC. This was only one person's experience as an IC and I was lucky to have good managers. They weren't easy conversations by any mean.

It depends entirely on the whims of your management chain.
There are a few ways :- 1. Be a negotiator, take credit for the little you've done & lots what you've not done - this is also known as "Politically sound" good success rate & you can reach upto sr director.60% engineers do this. 2. Work your ass off and present you case . Low success rate .25% population. most engineers keep hopping until they find a place to use other 3. 3. Work your ass off , try to blackmail your manager with the dependency & deliverables. Can work some of the times/moderate success rate but you'll remain IC .10% engineers 4. Suck/lick or whatever - 5%population. highest success rate & you reach to VP easy.
The easiest thing is to do a boomerang from another company to a higher level. Then I was told (by my manager) it is all about the connections you make in the company, which makes sense as you become a representative of sorts in this huge machine. After you get visibility it is easier to get buy in from higher levels (easier to sell for your manager), otherwise you are just some person who wants more money.
1) Boomerang. This is the most sure way. 2) Network/stretch assignment/kiss ass. You need your director to know your name and think you're solid, and you'll need two managers outside of your own management chain to know your name and think you're solid. 3) Get amazingly lucky with an unusual situation inside your group - IE your office splits off a new product group in the same BU, your tech lead + lead architect both die in a car crash on their way to lunch, etc.
