Is it just talking to a person? How does it do any good if the underlying root cause still exists? Does it work at all or is it a fuggazzi?
Wow posting on Blind if therapy helps, dude it has to be the opposite!
This is just my experience, so take it with a grain of salt. I think it depends on if you have a chemical imbalance issue or it’s a mental issue (like you have non-healthy thought processes). If it’s the latter, you need to make sure your therapist is *at least* as smart as you, otherwise it’s worthless IMO. If it’s the former, you just need meds.
They focus on dealing with the root cause if it still exists, forming an exit plan and following through. There are several types of therapy , not all is talk based. But your therapist is important in the success, just like your job or partner. So it works if you have a really good therapist
Therapists use a lot of different modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy. They will ask about your childhood and experiences and help you work through relational injuries, maladaptive schemas, etc. For example, if you have an underlying maladaptive schema that you are a failure, they can help you with corrective experiences to change that. it can take a while to find a good therapist that you vibe with but it is very valuable once you do. A good therapist will absolutely work with you on the root causes, this is why an honest childhood experiences intake is so important.
I’ve never done it but I’ve watched the sopranos. It’s probably just like that, you should watch. Good show
Depends on what the root cause is, and they can at least help you identify what category the root cause falls within. If it's something like being stuck in unproductive mental habits then they can help you with through those issues and develop new habits to improve your thinking. If it's chemical/biological in nature they can tell you to go see a psychiatrist to get meds but that therapist can still be useful to help you develop productive strategies to assist alongside the medication. If the root cause is something entirely out of your control and there's no meds available then they can help you develop coping strategies to help meditate the negative effects of your issue and give you a better shot at getting more enjoyment or fulfillment out of your situation regardless. Basically they'll help you identify what your goals are, and work with you to develop a strategy for you to use to get closer to that goal, and evaluate your progress with that strategy to see if anything needs adapting like an agile release and review process for life.
A therapist is an external perspective who shows you how to make peace with the underlying root cause in ways that you likely wouldn't see yourself. They are trained to ask the right questions to get you thinking in ways that you didn't expect to. Most are useless, but the right therapist can be a miracle worker. That was my experience.
Therapy is a tool, like a bicycle. You have to learn how to use this tool and it requires effort. Once you learn how, if you don’t ride the bicycle continuously you won’t get any health benefits — it takes consistency. Just like exercise. Personally I really like therapy and prefer Jungian based practice, Gottman methods, and personality psychology + positive psychology.
It's a scam for people who don't have any real friends. Peer-reviewed studies showing therapy is no more effective than talking to a close friend
I've been that friend. The problem is that it's exhausting being emotional support for somebody. You pay a therapist so you can keep your problems with them instead of spreading negativity through your social circle.
I agree to an extent, but talking with a close friend is not going to solve compulsively checking locks all day or a specific mental health issue like that.
Once you lose all the money, you’ll focus away from your problems instead on making more money. Seriously though, I know it’s helped a lot of people overcome things like anxiety to depression. You need to find a good therapist, who really wants to help you, and then give it a few months.
