AS = applied scientist RS = research scientist I have heard a ton of pip stories for sdes and pms but are AS or RS immune to pip? Getting a ton of recruiter calls but pip stories have made me reluctant to even talk to them. My background: ML phd. TC: 200+
Is pip rare if you are the only scientist on your team?
Same rate as the rest, 5%
PIPs are extremely rare if you're a RS/AS in a team of SDEs, under a software development manager (SDM). If you're a RS/AS in a team of scientists, managed by the applied science/research science/data science manager, then you have the same prob of getting PIPed as the SDEs and PMs. All managers have to pip x% of their team. A SDM mostly PIPs SDEs as she/he understands better what SDEs do and where they aren't meeting the bar as compared to a AS in his/her team.
I was a RS at Amazon and I would highly recommend you to consider Amazon. Don't worry too much.
Why do you recommend?
I think that PIP depends more on the management, also if you shouldn’t be at this job Am AS and never heard of PIP
