Asking because I have a fear of losing my job in this economy and not sure how long it would take for me to get another job again if worst thing ever happened. I might be overthinking but would be great to get some other perspectives if possible. I am a hard worker like I take pride in the task assigned to me, I barely do any leetcode and since I got into CS, have never really used any fancy framework. I am just kinda good at reading codebase and understand how they work, and then can likely google or do research to come up with some solutions in C# or Java (main languages I use but likely need more practice now). Maybe more sufficient than most new grads on popular tools like GitHub, etc. We own a house and the monthly mortgage payment is 3000, my wife herself won’t be able to cover it unless she works a second job. If I got laid off or fired, we could survive with the emergency fund and unemployment benefit for probably more than a year, but thinking about the situation where I could never get a tech job makes me really scared. Even a minimum wage job might not be enough. Not sure if others have the same concern before, would be great to get some suggestion
Is tech a requisite for you? More traditional non-tech SDE companies, especially defense-side like Boeing or Lockheed Martin, would be a pretty safe backup option for what you're saying Hope it doesn't come to it, but if it ever does, I'm sure you can get a P3 SW job at Boeing and I'm happy to refer. Boeing is literally always looking for SW and EE
Not quite a requisite but coding seems to be the only thing I know (only a bit more) how to do. I would assume with a 60k job would suffice. And really appreciate your offer. Do you mind me DM you and connect elsewhere?
Sure you can DM. Fair disclosure tho, Boeing tends to mostly look for US Persons in the US, but there are a lot of international jobs too if you're not American
Losing your job is not the worst thing that can happen to you. There’s a big gap between a high-paying tech job and minimum wage. A year of emergency fund is very good. You can apply to a lot of jobs at a lot of places in a year. You don’t have to work at a FAANG, there’s lots of jobs out there for experienced developers at a lot of companies. Even if it’s not a perfect fit, there’s jobs that pay the bills while you look for a better fit. Don’t overthink it.
I’m kinda similar to you. There are definitely chances of me losing job next month. I’m just doing leetcode as I get a chance, will be doing system design prep from next week(haven’t prepared for this ever before). Losing a job will suck but I’m not scared or anything after seeing so many layoffs in my company before. If I get laid off, the worst case scenario is I have to pack up and go back to India. The most likely though is I will get a job somewhere (could mean relocating and/or not liking the work). I can live with both of these. Idk, it seems it would be the same with most of us.
Do you have family? If not being bachelors, you can take any risk. Having family is even whole thing changes.
I know these are tough times. Everyone is on their toes. What worries me even more is imagine having a kid and then loosing job. People like us who only know how to code, survival on this very fundamental is so difficult. 😞
keep things in perspective - you could also randomly encounter a devastating medical diagnosis - at least with employment, you have some control. Use that to your advantage - be proactive with interviewing, networking and building you billable skills. Mentally take more control over your financial future by doing things that build resilience in your income. Be strong and take control.
Does it matter how hard it is? If you have to do it, you'll do it.
Just say you have 10 YOE
Bro, I wasn’t even scared of losing my job until I find your post.
Hell now I’m having second thoughts about my employment too
Sorry guys for spreading the anxiety…
