How hard is it to get into Google for a design role?

Tons of posts talk about how to get into Google for tech role. How is it for Designers? Is it hard? Thinking about to switch but I am a kinda afraid about the interview process.

How so? Do you have some insights?

Probably very hard, but not impossible. Fears are meant to be faced. Use it to help you prepare. From what I have read here, many people take a few attempts getting the right role.

A few attempts? It’s a five step interview process.. What do you mean by getting the right role?

If you don’t make it this time you are much more likely to make it next time. You’ll know the process better, the types of questions they ask, etc.

It’s been pretty easy for me — I’m on final round of interviews with Google (for UX manager role) and it was simply a call with the recruiter, they throw your resume out to all the hiring managers and if someone likes what they see, then they schedule a call with the hiring manager. From there it’s straight to on-site if the manager likes you. The process may be different for an IC vs a Leadership role though. The on-site itself is pretty standard: Presentation, 5 1:1s each 45min with behavioral questions and App critique. Just be thoughtful, have a solid story around your work, focus on the design decisions you made as well as how they tied back to user problems/need, and how you effectively collaborate across disciplines. Bonus if you can’t talk about how you balance addressing user need with tech feasibility.

I had pretty much exactly the same experience. Also design role. There isn’t really a special sauce or anything. Just have strong, relevant work, a unique POV that sets you apart and don’t be a douchebag. If you are the right fit, it’s really not that daunting. Everybody is very supportive and wants you to do well. Best of luck!
