Because Google has not ever done a sizeable layoff so people are scared and anxious. Putting people on pip or whatever Google calls to create layoff candidates is causing stress. It's stressful when the company advertises itself as a chill, relaxed place with free food and great culture

People on blind channel seem upset. At work I see management actively justifying why projects exist like how they contribute to bottom line. Morale at work seems okay.

At my company, everyone started to feel that the ones who are laid off with good severance packages are damn lucky. I hear that so many people are looking for other options.
