Work history: - Job 1 (out of college) —> 1.6 years (also 6 months of contract work while finishing school, same place so really a little over 2 years total) - Job 2 —> 1.25 years and this job was promotion too - Job 3 (current) —> a little over 1 year, even or slight down level but bigger company I’m trying to figure out how important it is to get an internal promotion here or if just riding out time here is good enough to then get an external promotion in a next position. Trying to map out potential paths
Ask for the KPIs for promotion in current role. This will set expectations. Realistically, at some point you’ll need to leave once and then come back to negotiate salary expectations. Some can advance within the company by changing roles and even better relocating to another high salary country, but joining another FAANG or Big4 will fast track salaries and promotions. This all depends on the current geo sentiment.
It’s okay to get promotion externally. But you really should try to understand what the requirements for the next level are internally to see if you’re tracking towards it. If you’re close I would consider just waiting it out a few months.
Thanks makes sense. It sounds like I’m close within 3 months but also a bit concerned because promos are supposedly slowing down to save on expenses, even at lower levels, and want to have a game plan in case I get caught up in it
You should have a conversation with your manager now to make sure you’re actually up for promotion and you meet all the requirements. Then if you don’t get the promo it’s an easier decision to leave.
Amazon L5 promo is easy so you should aim for it.
Internal promotions are a sucker bet. External is way less work and more achievable.

Question about women in their 30’s?
I’m in a similar situation, would it be a red flag if all my promos are through job hops?
nope, nearly everyone I know bounced around to get to where they are. 2 years for each role is a good stint, but it can be 12-18 months.
After 2020 there is no stability in career, so don't stress much about all these things.
