How important is team match
Had horrible intern experiences at Amazon this summer. Randomly thrown to a competitive team where everyone is so cold to me. Given a very difficult project out of the scope, and was complained I’m too slow by manager. I have to beg others to give me code review, and obviously they have no interest in reading my code. Anyway totally not a fit to the team, and feel embarrassed and humiliated at daily standup. Manager even said I should re-consider my career path, and I said I just lack of SDE experiences that’s why I’m here and need to have a try. But anyway this is a hit to my confidence and miserable experiences. But anyway I’m back to school, leetcoding, prépare other interviews. But I’m still confusing why this team not works for me. Yes I lack of experiences but I’m so hardworking and I’m smart. So I think team match is so important for my future career. I need a team that I feel fit in somehow. So wondering for other companies like Google, bf, Microsoft do they have team match process? Any suggestions appreciated.

If you like doing what you do, things will fall into place. 10 years back a btch ass indian networking company's interview panel told me to try to be journalist cause I have no networking skills. This intern experience looks like I wrote it. This is the exact same experience I had while interning at Amazon to the same point of manager pointing my career choice as an Sde. Man there are some really shitty managers out there not to say cold competitive teams at Amazon. Bdw @OP By any chance was your manager a senior developer and not a manager-manager?
Dude, I am SO sorry that happened to you. How brutal. Amazon is highly team dependent, more so that other companies imo.
There are a lot of other companies out there and if you like what you do don't let manager tell you otherwise. Just learn from it and keep going. My roommate had a similar experience at Amazon btw on the Kindle team. They didn't give him a return offer and told him to not be a dev. Well he's killing it at Uber now.
It's always hard to tell from one side of the story, but the possibility that OP is simply not up to the coding / intellectual tasks is bolstered not by what the manager said, but by the context of no peer support or appreciation. Every place I have been where the problem was a manager's attitude, the worker bees, at least some, handled the task of letting beat up individuals know it wasn't their fault. Being shunned universally by peers splits into three major forks: you socially don't fit in and they are a tight and narrow club, you don't meet standards, or you are that rock star who makes them all look bad when the team has been skating on minimal effort and bosses who can't tell.

Sorry this happened. Unfortunately Amazon is filled with incompetent managers. Was Sr.Sde before. It is clear you were setup for failure. And a manager who could not provide appropriate coacinhg. I know it's difficult, but try and avoid it affecting your moral. See if you can get any actionable feedback. To answer your question, yes team match matters a lot. But more importantly manager match is oof utmost importance. Especially in Amazon.
As tough as it sounds, your manager does not have to appreciate you for trying hard and not succeeding. If that's the case the manager should acknowledge your effort and gently suggest another path for you to become successful.
Do some introspection first. Why did your manager tell you to reconsider your career path? Was it really because he’s a bad person or is it because you were too slow or unwillingly to learn a complex codebase in an unfamiliar domain? Did you spend any time outside of work catching up on your deficiencies or did you “value work life balance”? To directly answer your question, yes team is very important. And there are some companies that move a bit slower than companies like amazon. Try to work for a finance company next time like capital one.
thanks! In fact I work so hard everyday till midnight and weekends to compensate my lack of experiences. But, thanks to your comment here which reminds me of another horrible thing, that is, manager never value my hardworking, but rather thinks this is reflection that I’m incompetent.
