Recently Graduated, started working on return intern offer as SDE 1 Backend in a MNC, in Mumbai India. 9.5 sees less to me as colleges like NITs have average TC of 15 LPA(Lakhs per annum) INR(21K USD). Also, HR hired some guys with TC 12-16 LPA INR(17K - 22K) with only 1 yoe, which seems unfair to me as I have also worked as open source contributor, with at-least 5 PRs per month merged for last 2 years and 3 internships. Should I try for just subscribe to Leetcode and try for Grab/Go Jek or just for Google(US/CAN/SNG) or any other FANG/Non-FANG New Grad? Working in International Office will require h1b, and will the company sponsor me, as an indian? My main goal for next 5 years is to get SWE job at Silicon Valley Office to gain experience and return back to India as Principal SWE.
Is this per month?
No, LPA - Lakhs per Annum. 1 Lakh INR = 1,423 USD
This seems extremely low. What is the tier of the company?
It's low. Amzn starts at 28 lpa
I have been trying to get referrals on LinkedIn but not able to get it :(
I don't think its low. In India salary starts around 4 lakhs in companies like Infosys . Even product companies like HP,Oracle etc. Pays around 10 lakhs. If you are interested in silicon valley, do a Master's (which is a common way people are coming to US).
But infosys is literally a joke.
Masters require money and grades(~6.5/10). Any idea if applying for fang new grad will help me to get to valley?
Why did you not plan on a masters. Just go the cheapest decent university and you can finish masters in 16 months and start working at 10 times your salary out the gate. Don’t have hopes of company in India sending you here for at least 2 years. Even then your lottery odds are low for h1b since it will be just a bachelors quota. Tons of folks in India is trying to get h1b. Would be way easier if you do masters
If I am planning to do masters, I will have to take a loan of 50k usd. How much time will i require after graduation to repay that amount of loan, considering living in silicon valley or seattle?
If you get intern and return offer your sign on bonus itself will be enough to pay off your loan. Else will take 6months-1 year depending on your spending
Go for masters in US or if you cannot afford, get 1+ year experience meanwhile leetcode as much as you can and work on your system design (HLD & LLD), do personal kickass project and then apply to FAANG, work there get L1b sponsored and then move to US via internal shift.
You’ll be fine. If you keep looking into everybody else’s wallet you’ll never be satisfied. Don’t do that to yourself. Get a masters after working a year or two and head over to the US if that’s what you want.
Reading the answers here, I think its the best option. Thanks for advise!
Glad it helps. I started at 2.5 LPA at a startup 5 years ago so it doesn’t matter where you start. Just where you end up. If you’re being underpaid and you might be, it sounds like you know your stuff, you can find your way to a better job. Stay curious, stay ambitious, do work you enjoy and sometimes even more important - the organization finds important, there’s no value in fiddling away on something you enjoy but will not mean much to the business. Absolutely work in Silicon Valley if that’s your dream. It’s unlike anywhere else and a life experience worth having if you’re in technology. All the best!
Do you mind sharing the name of the company?
Man consider yourself fortunate that you have job given that competition stiff nowadays. Also learn the skills first then money will follow you. Also stop comparing too much , your life will always be miserable. As per your current salary you are already in top 20 percentile of engineers in india
Would you mind which college did you graduate from? 9.5 lpa is pretty less if you are from one of the IITs and that too in Mumbai
I am really sorry if you found this stupid, I am not here to cry, but to ask for advise.
