How is Portland?

As a swe who could wfh, would you live in Portland? (Or across the river, Vancouver WA.) I am looking for places where I can be close to nature with clean air. Cannot be too remote since wife is pregnant. Portland seems to be a good place after some research.

Yep. Downtown definitely has a lot of homeless and there's the proud boys debacle once a year. Pay attention to the media and it's a war zone. But ask a local and it has beautiful scenery around, really nice people from diverse industries, cheap and better food, and the biggest con being passive drivers and a lackluster tech industry.

Can you save more money living in Portland(has income tax but cheaper col) vs Seattle (no income tax but higher col)?

Google Nfqd47 Nov 3, 2021

Seattle will give you significantly more money at the end of the year because of taxes, and cost of living not being sufficiently cheaper in Portland to make up for that.

Lose 14% of your income straight away. Add property tax if you buy. It’s nuts Proud boys once a year. Wtf. The only thing that makes that bad is antifa showing up to fight. And we have a weekly antifa debacle weekly.

Google pinkblack OP Oct 4, 2021

Why lose 14% State income tax? How about I just live across the river in Vancouver. 0% state tax and still a short drive to Portland.

Intel bikemonkey Oct 4, 2021

Yes state income tax. And go right ahead and live in Washington. Enjoy that commute

Portland handled the defund the police issue horribly and they’re severely under staffed and all crime has risen sharply. Avoid living in the city for now unless you have a gun for home defense

Holy sh!t

My friend said he hears drive bys from time to time and he never heard it before

I do some real estate investing up there and my guy that I work with says the market is still doing good but the trend now is to buy in the outskirts and suburbs. Downtown used to be a great place but it's a shitshow now. Have friends in neighborhoods like Alberta Arts district and NW area west of 405 and they seem to be ok.

I moved here before the pandemic hit and i gotta tell ya. Best decision I ever made. I'm from NYC so I'm used to Downtown being packed. Here everything is so chill and relax. The suburbs are like 15 mins from Downtown which is great. The only complain I have is the amount of homeless. But other than that, anyone who talks about how "crime" is killing Portland hasn't ever been here. The whole "protests" thing was centered in less than a 3 block radius, so nothing happened outside of that. Don't believe everything you see in the media. Go and take a look for yourself.

Prett much what Amazon said. We moved from SoCal. Get to live in an amazing 3.5K sqft home overlooking the city and still save more than we did living in a 1500sqft apartment in SoCal.

If you come here, I would urge you to consider the suburbs, as I believe the city is in the midst of a crisis. There are piles of trash everywhere and homeless camps are increasing at an alarming rate. Gun violence statistics for the past few years paint a very grim picture. From illegal street racing to random arson to open air chop shops, the overall atmosphere is that of lawlessness.

According to my experience, it’s a great place. I have lived here for a decade and purchased a home. Love the people here and diversity. Great food options, nature at its best and peaceful life (except downtown). I like the Bethany, cedar mills and forest park area. Con: state tax

Oracle SLdv83 Nov 26, 2021

NO just NO. It's a shitty city why wouldn't you pick Seattle suburbs over Portland. Won't pay state tax. People are generally rude here specially they feel entitled. You can see that from the amount protest happening here. Avoid Portland is Detroit in making.

Have lived in Portland Downtown for 6 years and love it. Granted the homelessness has increased a lot in the last couple years but it’s still better than Seattle and SF and way safer than most downtowns. Best part you what you pay in Bay or Seattle for a home in the suburbs with no view and a backyard that has your neighbors viewing you you get to live in a home with amazing views and walkable to downtown restaurants.
