I have an offer from Vanguard. How is work quality there? Does it look good on the CV? I am looking to up my SDE skills while maintaining a good work life balance. Would appreciate any insights. #vanguard #engineering #software #swe
Its been my experience that they are willing to pay market rates if you are coming in to a more senior position If you start at an entry level salary though, their rigid raise structure makes it hard to stay competitively compensated. Bonuses are very good though and I enjoy a lot of flexibility as a developer...well besides that hybrid schedule you mentioned.
Thank you for your reply. Is the work life balance good on the whole? How many hours would you say you work a week?
IMO Vanguard is a good place to go for a couple years and then leave for a huge pay bump after you’ve gotten experience. Or you can rest and best of you want too and just coast into retirement. It’s not a good place if you want autonomy to explore new innovative ideas, get paid market rates, or if you prefer not to go into office.
Also can depend on org and team you’re on, and WLB may vary a bit with attrition. If lots of folks have left on a particular team it can be rough if the load shifts onto you
Thank you - what kind of projects do you typically work on.
May I ask what’s the interview process? Like how many rounds and what types of grilling they do?
Was probably the easiest process I’ve been through. No leetcodes for me, just trivia questions.
So just trivial questions of one tech round and that’s it?! Don’t they have a director level second round star pattern interview?
WLB is good, decent learning experience if you’re newer to the field. but low pay and conservative management style
Thank you, By conservative management style do you mean its a stuffy environment?
inflexible to change. lots of people left due to return to office & below market comp (myself included) and they haven’t changed their tune at all. they aren’t innovators and tend to just follow what the other financial firms are doing
