How is life in Toronto?

I have a Canada PR in hand. With a 2014 priority date and missing an opportunity to get the EAD, I am seriously considering moving to Toronto and moving as a remote worker. How is life in Toronto? Will I miss out on anything moving from Mountain View? What are good neighborhoods to target in Toronto?

Why did u miss EAD ?

Mountain view >>> Toronto You'll miss on many many things

Meta fjsj88 OP Feb 12, 2023

In what way?

Maybe except Visa struggle... everything is good in USA

You will miss out on good weather and salaries. Be prepared to get paid almost half of what you’re making there. That’s the case with most orgs because of “location”

I’ll be getting a pay cut even at meta but it’s not like 1/2. $200k usd will translate to $170k cad. Yes, in usd terms it will be like $140k but I think your purchasing power is going to be roughly the same in Canada with $170k cad

Purchasing power is definitely not the same - you'll have more disposable income in the US and things cost more in Canada than in the US. That said, you're not going to struggle being single with $170k base salary in Toronto.

Winter in Canada is horrible

Meta fjsj88 OP Feb 12, 2023

Yes in comparison but it is one dimension among many

I would say it’s a very very important one. Half of my year would be miserable, and no amount of Canadian niceness would make up for it lol

It’s fun

You'll miss the weather only in jan and feb, i believe the monies will be the same if youre working remotely until you get transferred to canada, but toronto itself is an amazing city. Food will be better if not the same, people are really nice, there is a tonne to do and just like Mountainview, there is a lot if diversity if not more.

Toronto pros: Way better food More diversity Better dating scene More things to do (huge city) Decent transit system Toronto cons: Very cold winters, super hot summers High cost of living and less pay Less safe than mountain view, but infinitely safer than SF Mountain view pros: Amazing weather and constant blue skies Access to nature Better place to build savings since higher TC Mountain view cons: Almost nothing to do nearby Much more suburban (seems more for families)

Thank you, this is a good summary

What about housing?

Raytheon raysucks Feb 12, 2023

I would rather do farming in India if I had to leave California but ain't moving Canada 😂 hell no, freezing, expensive, high tax, lots of maintenance pot hole, high gas price, high electric bills, extremely high car insurance, groceries bills sky rocketed, houses are damn expensive, no great weather from September to June.

Vancouver is probably a better option.
