The end of Backdoor Roth?!
I've heard that a big reason Netflix hires top talent because streaming is really difficult but haven't heard the same kind of things about their competitors.
The other streaming companies have so much more content they started with, especially a ton of legacy content which helps them gain the user base. All of them suck when it comes to their UI.
This is spot on. Try using Netflix vs the other apps. It will take you back to 1856
Amazon Prime streaming is trash, for example
Streaming isn’t *that* difficult now. Netflix pays a lot because they are an incredibly lean company and compensate engineers more because of it
We have revenue of 30B and engineers cost 1B. Open connect saving alone pays the bill.
Netflix does not necessarily hire top talent any more. New grads and less experienced candidates are considered too.
I think the big difference is that Netflix is a tech company. They pretty much invented streaming as we know it, so their culture is very specific. HBO, Disney, etc. are content creators and have recently started adding a web application as a product channel. Different culture
HBO was one of the first to market (2010) with HBO GO. Although they thought it was a marketing gimmick / fad, lol. It was originally launched even earlier in 2008 as “HBO on Broadband” — just a year after Netflix’s streaming service launched. I would say Netflix slightly overestimates the complexity of building a streaming service, and every other streaming app significantly underestimates the complexity. Netflix is a tech company, everyone else is running a media company. Execs fundamentally don’t understand how to build or run a tech company. So you see them learn in public a bit.
HBO has the worst platform. When I get HBO to my Chromecast It makes me so frustrated that sometimes I just quit watching the show
I might suggest an Apple TV if you end up looking for a dedicated smart TV device someday. All the apps are much more polished, partially because **shocker** Apple rejects the shittier builds companies try to push through and forces them to fix bugs. The way I see it, I have a $2,000 oled monitor I watch TV on. I can spend at least $150 on the computer powering it. Chromecast gets far less attention than more popular devices.
Top talent might be in their initial days nowadays is that even true?
The bar may have lowered but I think they still get a lot of Xooglers and ex-Meta folks.
Other streaming companies can just offload all the infra work to cloud providers and CDNs. They just need to hire some better frontend ppl to fix their UIs and most consumers prolly wouldn’t be able to tell the difference in quality between streaming apps
The cost of 3rd party CDN fee alone is enough to pay all Netflix engineers and we have free peering with most ISPs.
Perhaps. But it also allows streaming companies to be more flexible and not have to worry about infra maintenance. I think it’s def worth the cost as CDN costs probably go down over time as it’s a very competitive industry
They probably hire good enough talent considering they exist and are wildly successful
