How is the overall culture at Amazon Chennai ?
I read on Quora some bad reviews especially about the dominance of Tamil language , wonder if that’s true.
Chennai has a high volume of English speakers compared to rest of the country. You will be fine
Local language is Tamil. Apart from Tamil, most people speak and understand English.
Overall culture is pointless, totally depends on your team. There may be some bad teams but that’s the exception. Majority of devs on a lot of teams are not from TN. YMMV but try to find someone on the team you’re looking at and talk
Culture is team dependent but the weather is really bad. Extreme humidity and heat. It's extremely hard for a non local to get used to it. Choose Bangalore/Hyderabad over Chennai if at all possible.
On an honest note , I read , an outsider may feel left out as everyone tend to converse in Tamil , I may be wrong but that’s what I found out in one of the responses on Quora
The city would definitely make you feel like an alien if you don't speak Tamil. The people at Amazon mostly talk in English.
Tamilians are considerate. They don’t make assumptions that everyone speaks Tamil. Unlike fellow hindi speaking people.
Who are you joking with brother? Considerate? Seriously? Let me tell you, If Tamilnadu has an option to leave India and create a separate country, they would do it today itself. Dare I say it, Tamilnadu has more hatred for New Delhi than Pakistan would ever have in their entire lifetime and you can’t deny that, the reason is nothing but just a language, Hindi. It’s just that I was wondering if it’s the same case within the company as well. I personally had a Tamil manager when I used to work at Microsoft, let me tell you, he would boast day and night about how old and beautiful Tamil language is , tell me about it. No I’m not lieing. Also fyi , I don’t waste my life comparing languages, it’s so hilarious to even think of, I never saw a more obsessed community like Tamilians do with language, I mean it’s just a language, no one is saying bad things about Tamil language, chill out, but still you guys act as if you there should be a separate Oscar award category for oldest languages and Tamil language should win it. Hindi speaking people use Hindi just like any other language, they are not obsessed with it. It’s not like some brownie point.
Eh - not Tamil, but that doesn’t sound bad. Your manager sang praises about the Tamil language, that’s what you have a problem with? And by that you claim Tamil Nadu is more anti-Indian than Pakistan? Your exaggeration here is harmful. Sounds like you’ve made up your mind. 100% you’ll be miserable in Amazon and Chennai - and that’s good. You’ll miss out on much.
Thalaivaaa .. Chennai ppl love movie stars especially Ajith & vijay so much that they are willing to die or even kill someone if they talk bad about their heroes... their movies are truly amazing 👏
I've been to all major cities. In Chennai only weather is deal breaker. In terms of traffic, safety and infrastructure its way better than up north (hyd might be exception) Compared to North lot of locals here can understand English but quite opposite for Hindi. Coming back to your question in my experience people try to use English as much as possible in common forum. The competition is fierce like anywhere else in Amazon doesn't matter where you come from. OP sounds like a an prejudiced idiot who makes wide sweeping assumptions based on one or two anecdotes. Tamil Nadu is a very welcoming place, but it won’t be a loss to not have you in Chennai.

The 2 times I went to Chennai, I thought I entered a fish tank which is being slow boiled. The stench and humidity is deplorable. If you are not local look elsewhere
Next time you go there don't live in a homeless tent, try to get a hotel room.
