I like Spotify as a product, and I've heard great things about how agile things are internally: teams are organized in self-sustainable squads being autonomous enough to innovate while being owners of their field. Teams are also grouped by tribes and guilds, for more holistic integration with other pillars of the company. All seems pretty exciting and it surely sounds like a great place to work at, but, from the perspective of someone that has already worked there: how is it, really really?
Can't speak to the org/culture. It's a good/great product but a bad business to be in - Apple Music / Amazon music are going to dominate this and not because they have a superior product but deeper pockets and better distribution (more so for Apple).
I'd challenge this. Even with Apple Music launching over 1.5 years ago, their success has not even come close to putting Spotify out of business. They have deep pockets, too. Amazon music is not even in the picture so I have no idea what you're talking about there.
curious as well.....
I wasn't asking about the business. Sure, it's a competitive one and new challenges will come, but I wouldn't be so sure about Spotify being fucked. Apple is probably more fucked: they have the money and infrastructure to succeed, but no passion and real need to dominate this market. They just do it because they want to sell more devices, that's the end goal for them. They can easily kill Apple Music and go on with their core businesses at any time.
Fair enough dbx. I'm not that interested in the music industry that much, but mostly looking for in a good and healthy software development team that moves agilely and autonomously regardless of the size of the company.
I suspect Spotify will be acquired by Apple or Amazon.
I work there and all of the things you said are true. I really love it. Lots of autonomy, support, opportunity for development. Of course where in the org you work matters, who your colleagues are matters, your preference for less/more structure matters. All of these will impact your experience but there is a good community that is supported through lots of company benefits, events, and perks etc. I really like it and actively try to recruit my friends.
