For an indian working at US on L1 sponsored by msft/amzn, how long does it take to get H1B? I believe only then they can look out for job opportunities at other companies and the salary band is also different, right? Please give some insights about L1 vs H1B as well. #visa #amazon #microsoft
I am not sure how company matters here. H1B is a lottery and it’s all luck. I was on L1B and I didn’t get picked in lottery for 4 years. Whereas I know people who got H1B in first attempt. If you’re planning to move to US on L1B, I wouldn’t recommend it. Get L1A if possible. But if you’re in US already, good luck.
I was deciding whether I should move to US through internal switch in company or through Masters route. My work experience will be 5 years by Fall 2021 and I currently have offers from Microsoft L61 and Amazon L5, and I am afraid if I would end up getting L59 or L4 job after Master's. I'm confused about whats better
I know people getting L61/L5 after Masters with 2-3 YOE. So you shouldn't worry about that.
Best case : 1 year Avg Case: 3 years Worst Case: Never L1 salary are pretty low compared to H1B. Would say L1 earn around 60% of what an H1B earns at the equivalent level.
It's lottery. Not in your control.
"Masters + downleveled to new grad 2 years from today" vs "continue in the same company" is really what you are evaluating. I think many people said this in response to your post yesterday as well - dont forget the downlevel part. Don't worry about Amazon PIPs in the US. If you do well enough to get an L1 in India and move to the US, you will absolutely kill it at Amazon Seattle. Most US people on Blind have never worked in India, so are completely unaware of how ruthlessly competitive you have to be to survive in India.
You said it!! Do you believe competition in tech in India is greater than that in US?
Yes. Harder to get hired, longer hours, higher self expectations on output etc in India. US work life will be a cake walk compared to India, in the exact same company.
Go for L1. You should be able to move to new company after you get H1B. On L1B you can be here for 5 years. Probability of getting H1B within 5 years is very high. With MS route you will loose 2 years as well as you will be given lower level in new company.

1 vs 5 Million - no lifestyle change
its a lottery. You might not even get it. The odds are 1/3 each year you apply.
How did you get those odds? OP is not on opt to get three chances. And even if they did, the odds are not 1/3.
Say for example FY 2021 H1B visa applications. USCIS received nearly 275,000 FY 2021 registrations between March 1, and March 20, 2020. Because H1B visas are capped to 65k a year. (plus 20k visas for master degree holders only) your chancess to win the lottery are: (65+20)k/275k ~ or around~ 1/3.
