Given the current situation, and people on here have a way better idea how the engineering of a site like Twitter all works than most people, how long do you think it will take for the tech of Twitter to stop working such that it’s just not usable anymore?
Status quo can be maintained for years. Conservative engineers will work hard and keep the lights on until Lord God Elon turns the ship around.
Lol unusable? Do you think they have people pedaling bikes to keep it online or something? The code base has been around for 15 years. I’d bet it could run stabile for years without interaction.
They don’t have people riding Pelotons powering everything?!!
The hell is realtor.com
I thought it would take longer but now we’re finding out Elon finally thought it might be important to think about the World Cup two days before it begins and now I’m way less bullish on an available Twitter
Absolutely we are the best people to predict.. just last week I 'designed twitter' in 45 mins and a week before 'designed YouTube' in 1 hour call.. 😛
Lol welllll better than cable news commentators 😂
Where do you get a whole hour for system design?
It’s slowly breaking. At least on web on iPhone, I don’t get notifications anymore @ threads are getting fully expanded on the timeline
I requested a data backup yesterday and still haven’t gotten it. Come to think of it I haven’t had any notifications tonight. I just thought nobody liked me anymore 😂
At planetary scale infra little things break all the time. Think of the insane number of services with 99.99% uptime. That .01% will come calling and when it doesn't get fixed it'll erode the uptime of neighboring services etc. It's a network effect. On calls or whoever is supporting patches shit up and it keeps going to prevent this. OnCall and support is gone, so Twitter is going to die slowly.
Probably very quickly, or at least quicker than otherwise given World Cup
Also everyone going on, “codebase is stable” Yah, man, don’t gotta do shit for Hadoop clusters, hard drives never die, networks never change! BGP, who needs it!
Twitter, exactly as Elon bought it, could probably run for years on a very lean staff keeping it working. However, he instantly tried to change too many things and is now losing the staff he would need to make safe updates to the code and test it, so the likelihood that any new update breaks it has significantly increased.
Ohhhh you’re right. Him wanting to change things is definitely going to expedite the dying process
So the options are either financial failure or technical failure? Is it really not possible to run the site for less than a $4M/day loss?
Very likely technical failure AND financial failure. He's reducing expenditure by sacking people but also bleeding on ad revenue, and once bugs start showing up, people will stop paying for Blue.
Eh, he took a few hundred million a year in cost out of the business already. Engagement is higher than ever, it’s not going to take long for advertisers to come back. Besides, I’m not convinced ad revenue is even down. Sure a few walked away but I’m getting served as many ads as ever.
I'm just waiting for the next SAS risk lmao.

Hey man, just a humble request. Please tag @Elon in these posts and ideally post such questions on Twitter itself. I’m sure that petty man-child will respond especially if you criticize his intelligence (or lack thereof). Good luck OP!
My Twitter feed isn’t engineers / the R&D side of tech (it’s all election stuff and marketing) but I totally will
