How many hours of your day at work do you spend writing code?
I have been doing a lot of interviews of late and more often than not recruiters ask me "In a regular work day, how many hours do you write code" or "What percentage of your work involves coding". What's the right way to answer these questions. I always progressed to the next rounds so I don't seem to be saying anything too off. But I just wanted to understand how everyone handles this question and how much of that time is spent in coding (directed more towards developers of course). How would you typically breakdown your work? 10% Planning 20% Research 40% Code 10-20% Documentation Rest Miscellaneous For recruiters/Hr, what are you trying to infer from a question like this? Is there a minimum benchmark you are looking for?

When interviewing for Google the recruiter asked me that question. I said roughly 50%. They then snapped back at me, "Google engineers spend 90% of their time writing code, could you handle that?" Now that I'm here, I see that number is B.S.

What about code reviews? Sometimes, it can take a significant amount of time if you are dealing with inexperienced developers.
They want to know if you are hands on enough for a technical position or if you are more like a PM.
