Just trying to understand how the bonuses are distributed so that I can have an idea of how I’ve been performing compared to others in my level And is there any point in working a lot harder if the rewards are going to be almost the same…
Bonus targets are absolutely shit. I was once awarded at 150% bonus (which is unusual for Apple) and it was simply because my manager miscalculated my target bonus amount.. and he figured out his math error during the compensation discussion 🤣 There’s a lot of leeway for managers on target bonus amounts and it is always better to expect more than 100% specially if you get an exceeds rating. When I was a manager, one of my engineers asked me “what does rating exceeds expectations mean if the awarded bonus doesn’t exceed expectations?” and I had no good answer. Now back to IC role, I always ask the same question to my manager 🤷♂️
At Facebook it’s entirely formulaic based on rating. Managers have no discretion (beyond the rating).
I find that hard to accept. You just mentioned that some get 125% vs 200% vs 300%.. I assume FB doesn’t have ratings beyond exceeds expectations.
This is different at every company, but at Facebook about 50-60% receive more than the target, most of those get 125%, considerably fewer get 200%, a very small number get 300%.
What?? Is this true? 125% is more than double the base salary
125% of the target bonus, which varies with level.
