I am in the team matching stage with Google(L5) and had 6 team matching sessions already. I like one team and that team manager asking few days to give an answer as he is talking to few other engineers. I got this info from my recruiter. I am bit worried as my recruiter said tipically candidates match a team after 3 or 4 sessions. And he would like me to choose a team after my next team fit session. Googlers, How many team matching sessions you had when you were joining? #google #engineering

I joined Google as an L3. I had around 3 matching sessions and I didn’t end up matching with a team. They had over-hired at that time so a fair amount of engineers couldn’t find teams. The lack of matching was mostly my fault since I was trying to work on hardware and I had no hardware experience so no teams obviously wanted to hire me. They ended up assigning me to a team and I didn’t have a choice.
Did you start liking your team after you join?
Yeah, it ended up being a decent fit. Initially I tried to interview internally and find a different team, but I couldn’t find anything that was strictly better (there’s not a lot of cool openings for an L3) so I rode it out until I got a promotion. There might be a loose rule that you’re not supposed to transfer internally unless you’ve been at Google for a year but no manager would want to keep someone captive if they’re not happy, and I was told I could transfer out if I found an opening on another team. I know a couple people who have joined teams that weren’t good fits for them and have had good luck transferring and finding different teams, although obviously it’s dependent on whose hiring at the time.
