Title - how much TC increase would it take for you to move. I've heard that in general to switch jobs you should look for a 30% increase, but that did not make a statement on moving across the country. How much TC increase would it take to make you move across the country? My specific context and why I am asking the question: 29M currently in Austin. I have 2 YoE in defense and am about to finish a Master's in CS. I love Austin and would like to stay, date, and settle down here but I know that SoCal/NorCal/Seattle have many more jobs out there. Since I am trying to make the transition from defense to tech I figure I'm going to have to take whatever opportunity comes my way (pls Anduril) and won't have too much choice on where I end up. TC: 98K YoE: 2 #Anduril #swe #engineering #tech
Having lived in both SFO and Seattle, I’d say Austin is a better option. Still affordable and burgeoning tech. The only downside is if you don’t like harsh summers. Oh, and being a part of TX and the lunatic government.
Thanks for the input - and yeah that's why I'm trying to stay here - it seems like the perfect set up right now. Hill country is gorgeous, houses aren't that bad, and the city is great. It'd suck to miss out on SFO and Seattle as a tech guy - I've heard they're beautiful areas though VHCOL I don't tend to move based on politics so I'm not too bothered by the government haha.
You're going to want to triple that TC to make moving to bay worth anything.
The change in TC would need to be enough that I can afford a similar housing situation, commute situation, and take home pay situation to what I currently have, plus 20%. When talking about moving to Seattle, SF, etc. that equates to an increase (mainly due to hosing costs) to a couple million a year. So the realistic answer is, "no amount".
It'd have to be more than double my TC to consider moving to a sh*thole like SF or Seattle. I'd be more flexible for Los Angeles or San Diego
I’m not going back into the office no matter what, for any amount of TC. Any job I work has to be fully remote and with a TC bump for me to even think about it. TC: 105K

Let’s say you target 30% increase, and you are moving to an area with 20% cost of living more.so your target tc will be roughly = current tc x 1.3x1.2 Many site will provide you with cost of living comparison
