I'm curious, because Glassdoor lists a salary that's in line with L6 at Google, but no stock - are they really paid that low, or does Glassdoor just not have good data? --edit-- Why am I asking? I had a discussion with a Senior Technical Fellow at Boeing who said "Google couldn't afford me" when I jokingly asked if he wanted to come to Google. I'm wondering if Boeing actually pays their top engineers that well, or he just doesn't know what the broader industry pays.
Like 250k iirc
Probably a little less but the highest paid ones could
Heard they worked like 5 hrs a week (irreplaceable technical knowledge)
Guess that is a form of pay. 😁
Although, Boeing STF salary is closer to Google L4, But an STF draws a lot of respect at Boeing. There are very few of those. Additionally, majority of Boeing employees are very loyal to the company and have been there for 35+ years and they don’t even look for jobs outside. So, It could be that person is unaware of market rate.
TFs are typically L6s and might make in the upper part of the band. In a west coast city my guess is like $220k. STFs make low-end Director (E5) salaries which means about $350k. Principal STFs (E4) make about $600k. Distinguished STFs (just Kevin Wise right now) make VP (E3) salaries of about $900k. source: made a spreadsheet from the below link from 2016. Also, highest paid Boeing engineer Kevin Wise complained to a group that STFs get bonuses at the bottom of the Director rack-and-stack. My boss (a director) confirmed that directors now make about $400k. https://static.fmgsuite.com/media/documents/a57b6612-7c59-4d3a-9e85-856380aeb593.pdf
This is very interesting, I really appreciate you posting this. It reinforces what I expect out of the program. I am an L4 getting top reviews, joined Boeing 3 years ago. L6 as a TF is only getting $220k? Thanks no.
I’ve been told by other tech fellows you don’t do it for the money. Tech Fellows can enter the fellowship at level 4 and all they get for it is a one time stock grant. I’ve never been able to tease out the amount but I don’t think it’s much. Today is my last day at Boeing and I know they offered me max level 5 pay for my location + 15k to match my cash salary at a Silicon Valley start up. I was an level 4 but had recently graduated from the internal leadership development program called LX. I was also running a big project for a strategic company initiative. I ended up leaving even though I love Boeing the upside at other companies is much higher. Like one of the other posters said Directors are only pulling like 300k and typically have 20+ year careers to get to that point. I’m being paid that and then some in my new role for a lower level position. It would take me another 4 promotions if I entered the management track to make similar compensation.
Are you in software engineering role or not?
Did you find this LX program useful at all? Did this program help you get a better job?
Tech Fellow at Boeing is a bullshit title. You do it in addition to your actual title. For example right now I am an L4 (which is basically a tech lead of a project), and they are already asking me to apply for the associate technical fellow program. It’s apparently not a role but an award at Boeing, I’d keep doing my same job. I smelled BS and want to have nothing to do with it. Funny, the chief engineer of my project said he also got offered to apply for the title years ago and didn’t see the value and refused, yet many of the people working for him are now technical fellows, and I’ve worked with them all and they are nothing special. Point in case - it doesn’t mean anything at Boeing.
To your point about your friend saying Google can’t afford him, being senior tech fellow at Boeing, that is 100% bullshit out of your friend. The truth is he can’t cut it at Google and probably can’t even get out of Boeing at all. I’ve run into these types in my short career at Boeing, ego sky high and skills in the gutter. Do you really think Google can’t afford this guy at a non-tech company because of some title? Google pays for play, Boeing pays for making you think that you can play. This guy probably has such a huge ego that you wouldn’t believe it unless you worked with him, and if you want to experience that, join Boeing. I am laughing, scoffing, upset, rolling my eyes, and just disturbed that anyone could think that google can’t afford a Boeing guy. Yet as I’ve said I’ve run into a number of guys with that attitude here.
That guy from Boeing is delusional.
Lol! Tech fellow salary ranged from 185000-350000 max …. I laughed when someone said google can’t afford em. Lol. Total BS. Most of Boeing tech fellows are oldies with no tech skills but pure BS and PowerPoint champions. I have 3 offers till date. 3 times what boeing is paying now and all I did was LC grind every day from the last 2 years. That TF is delusional AF. I will never recommend trying TF/ATF ever or even SDE at Boeing.
