How much do you save into 401k

Dec 5, 2019 46 Comments

Given that there is no company matching at all, do you still max out your 401k contributions? If I plan to leave the states in 5 years, should I contribute to my 401k?

thanks.

The trend is that the middle class pays less and less income tax. Hard to picture withdrawing enough in retirement that you wouldn’t be considered middle class based on income.

Options on alternative investments? Roth IRA is better as you pay taxes now. Real estate investments, small businesses.

If you can afford it, pay the max amount the IRS lets you, which currently is 19k. Regardless of company match.

Everything you contribute is tax free until you withdraw.

It’s taxed on withdrawal but not on gains, and the initial tax contribution is a tax break.

It’s a much better deal than just throwing the equivalent amount of money into an index fund.

Of course! If the company is not matching, IRS certainly is. You will get an untaxed growth on your funds.
I would check with the lawyers, but if you left, you should not be considered a resident of the state and get your money free of state taxes.

Well, whatever you withdraw is a subject to income tax. But you can let it grow for years and you don't have to pay tax every year.

Growth is taxed. It's just taxed when you withdraw, just like most other investment vehicles (see: capital gains).

I max out my 401k. Fuck taxes and fuck the government. When I retire early I'll take it out with SEPP to avoid the 10% penalty

Max out 401k and Roth IRA. Always. It’s legalized tax evasion.
