What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I’m moving house soon and I’ve hired movers to help with this. How much do I tip the people doing the move? Should I tip at all? The move is being done by a professional company and costs over 1k This is in Seattle - the estimate is about 5 hours for 3 people to do the move. I have 2 couches, a couple of beds and then a bunch (about 5-10) boxes
Depending on the number of person. I will tip them 50-80$ each
Aren’t you already paying them?
I agree and that’s why I’m not sure. Technically that’s true for most things though. I tip at a hair salon but this one feels like I’m directly paying for a service so I’m unsure about whether to tip or not
No, you are paying the owner of the company. The movers are likely minority / lower economic level, paid low wages, and doing heavy lifting for your amusement and pleasure (ie, so you don’t have to). Despite the low pay and hard work, the movers at the company we used were fantastic, hard working, great attitude, and very helpful (when we were not completely prepare before they arrived). You are pulling in high FANG level TC. The owner of the company may do well; but those movers will never reach anywhere close to your level. So go ahead and tip them; and tip them well. Why not tip them at 10% to 20% of the move — especially if you have a great rate?
Added information about the move specifics to the post
Sounds like an easy move. I'd say $30 per person.
That's all you have? Unless the drive is several hours, why is that a 5 hour move? Or are they actually packing stuff too?
They are doing furniture disassembly but I’m probably leaving out a few things from the move. I’ve mainly listed what I consider as heavy items
I did $25 each and local amazing L pizza box.
They earn around $20 per hour. $25-$50 per person is OK, if you give more, they will be very happy. It’s a hard work, no parental leave, no sick leave. People pay $20 to the girl bringing food and drinks to their table, these guys will move heavy stuff for 5 hours.
Girl? Even men waiters get tipped fyi.
Thank you for clarification.
The place I use in Kirkland busts their ass so I tip well, about $20 per person per hour.
Seattle movers tip themselves. First thing they will do after they arrive is look around, tell you they didn't expect the elevator to be so far or too many steps or the corridors too narrow and you will end up paying twice the original price.
Location? Is your furniture super heavy? Time? Last yr I tipped $20 each for 4 hours work (and our furniture is not too heavy). Location: Central Texas
